The Tax Team function within Schwab Asset Management (SAM) is primarily responsible for all tax matters relating Schwab’s proprietary mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and alternative products. The Tax Team is looking for a Senior Manager to support their growing team. This individual is responsible for ensuring the various tax requirements and regulations are satisfied for these products. As a Senior Manager you will be responsible for working with members of the Tax team and will work with other SAM departments on an ongoing basis.
This role requires partnering with all functional areas within SAM including, but not limited to portfolio managers, product managers, fund accounting, trade operations, independent auditor, and financial reporting representatives. This person will ensure that internal controls are documented, implemented, and appropriately monitored as it relates to the continued analysis of new products and securities. This role also includes the responsibility to stay abreast of regulatory changes and implement those changes on a go-forward basis. The Senior Manager will also be an active participant in new product initiatives and current product business changes. This is an individual contributor role.
Primary responsibilities include:
Responsibility for tax matters, including establishing tax policies, relating to alternative product types and non-traditional asset classes such as partnershipsHelp oversee tax services of outside service providers to ensure deliverables are complete, accurate, and provided on time and assist with performance evaluation, recommending changes when necessaryMaintain internal control documentation and assist with the documentation of tax legal positions (ASC 740)Be a leader in the financial statement audit process as it relates to the review of taxable income calculations and preparation of annual tax disclosuresAssist with the development, implementation, and documentation of new products and completion of new product strategies. Perform or assist in technical research and analysis related to domestic and foreign tax issues affecting various product and investment types, fund qualification and compliance matters as well as develop practical solutionsBe a leader in the development and implementation of tax accounting and reporting policies and continually improving procedures to facilitate pro-active identification, management, and resolution of tax issuesBe a leader in year-end excise tax distributions processBe a leader in the shareholder tax reporting processReview various tax filings (e.g. Federal, state, foreign, partner) and ensure timely and accurate filingWork closely with other departments within Schwab and outside service providers; i.e., fund accounting, portfolio management, marketing, transfer agency, financial reporting, product teams, sales strategy, inside counsel, independent auditors, and external tax authorities What you haveRequired Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree requiredA minimum of 10 years of experience in taxation of partnerships and regulated investment companies (RICs) at a major accounting firm or in the asset management industryProficient knowledge of partnerships, RICs, financial instruments, and strategiesStrong project management, vendor management and research skillsPreferred Qualifications
CPA or Masters in Tax preferredProven verbal and written communication skills and ability to interact within all levels of SAM and with other external/internal partnersProven organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to meet tight deadlinesDrive and skillset to identify areas of opportunity and implement effective change and automationProactively support business partners and overall company goals through collaboration and effective networkingStrong analytical and problem-solving skills, including ability to deliver clear and concise analysisIn addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
