Sr. Manager, Packaging Innovation

As part of our R&D Engineering team, you will work closely with our Quality and Manufacturing teams to develop the latest tools and technologies to address significant, unmet clinical needs that impact patients’ lives around the world. The Advanced Packaging Team (APT) is reimagining packaging through smarter, safer, and more sustainable solutions—leveraging novel materials, automation, robotics and circular design to ensure every innovation reaches patients with precision and care. **About the Role** We are seeking a visionary and technically accomplished **Senior Manager, Engineering for Packaging Innovation** to lead the research and development of next-generation packaging solutions for our global portfolio of medical devices. This role will lead a high-impact, multidisciplinary team to deliver transformative innovation in materials, design, prototyping, material characterization, automation, cold chain, simulation, innovation labs and sustainability—ensuring global compliance, operational excellence, and measurable value for patients, partners, and the enterprise. **How you’ll make an impact:** + Lead the Edwards Advanced Packaging Technology (APT) platform, overseeing strategy, execution, and governance. + Incubate, ideate, and build a portfolio of organic innovation programs, into executable projects aligned with business goals. + Conduct market research and analyze consumer trends to identify new packaging opportunities. Articulate recommendations and insights to senior leadership to drive packaging innovation strategies. + Champion disruptive packaging technologies including predictive engineering, novel disinfection methods, and sustainable materials. + Collaborate cross-functionally with: Product and Packaging Research & Development (R&D), Regulatory, Quality, Operations, and Supply Chain stakeholders to ensure packaging solutions can be implemented into clinical and commercial launches. + Nurture and evangelize novel ideas and translate early-stage concepts into user-centered, manufacturable, and scalable design solutions. + Serve as a key leader of the Edwards– Packaging Council to develop and present business cases that align with organizational strategy and drive cross-functional execution. + Engage with external partners and suppliers to evaluate and integrate emerging technologies. + Establish and maintain packaging innovation frameworks, including mission/vision alignment, technical roadmaps, and performance metrics. + Lead and mentor a high-performing diverse team of scientists, engineers and technicians across materials, simulation, prototyping, sustainability, automation, testing and other pioneering areas. + Develop future leaders and foster a culture of innovation and excellence. + Oversee departmental budgets and project execution, ensuring all deliverables align with business objectives. Manage project plans—including scope, schedule, and risk mitigation—while driving issue resolution and cross-functional collaboration. + Demonstrate strong financial acumen as it relates to engineering decisions and investments. **What you’ll need (Required):** + Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in Engineering or Science. + 10+ years of experience in a regulated industry, with at least 5 years in a leadership role. **What else we are looking for (Preferred):** + Solid understanding of packaging standards and global regulations (e.g. EU MDR, PMDA, FDA, ISO, ASTM, AAMI, IEC, IATA, DOT), material science, decontamination (sterilization) methods, Design of Experiments (statistics) and digital simulation tools is required. + Proven track record of leading innovation programs from concept through commercialization (design, developing and qualification) of packaging solutions is required. + Passion to grow people + Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders. + Experience with and knowledge of the execution of Intellectual Property and Regulatory strategies is needed. + Experience with cold chain packaging, robotics, porous & temperature/moisture barrier alternatives, and digital twins is needed. + Familiarity with global regulatory environments (EU MDR, China NMPA, etc.). + Passion for sustainability and patient-centric design. + Participate and present at meetings with internal and external representatives + Develop peer, cross functional and cross business relationships to maximize knowledge sharing and leverage them to influence change. + Adhere to all company rules and requirements (e.g., pandemic protocols, Environmental Health & Safety rules) and take adequate control measures in preventing injuries to themselves and others as well as to the protection of environment and prevention of pollution under their span of influence/control Aligning our overall business objectives with performance, we offer competitive salaries, performance-based incentives, and a wide variety of benefits programs to address the diverse individual needs of our employees and their families. For California (CA), the base pay range for this position is $136,000 to $192,000 (highly experienced). The pay for the successful candidate will depend on various factors (e.g., qualifications, education, prior experience).
