Welcome to the role of Sr. Field Technician – Fiber Optics. In this position, you will string and maintain fiber optic cable which includes pulling, tensioning, stranding, and spacing lines. This individual will troubleshoot, maintain, and repair fiber lines. This position requires proficiency with new cable installs, removals, modifications, and repairs in outside plant locations to include telephone poles, underground services, and conduit. The Sr. Field Technician is also responsible for terminating, splicing, documenting, and testing fiber optic cables with an end goal of meeting customer needs and providing maximum operating efficiency. The work performed will be within communications and power spaces.

 

This individual understands each product and supports the improvement of operational efficiency and must be comfortable working in heights and confined spaces for this position.

What You'll Do Safely perform work in communications and energized spacesParticipate in work requiring pole climbing when necessaryPerform work from an elevated position in the bucket truckRecognize general safety hazards and electrical-specific hazards such as missing and or degraded parts and hardwareManage worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspectionsPerform minor field repairs on equipmentLead cable stripping, cleaving, terminating, and testing Stay up to date with Industry Standard coding for fiber opticsProficiently work with and calibrate fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR (optical time domain refractometer), traffic identifiers, light-source power-meter, fiber specific hand tools, etc.Utilize proper methods and procedures for terminating, splicing, and testing fiber optic cablesPerform ring cuts on live fiber without affecting existing servicesRead and understand manufacturer manuals and proficiently perform standards for operating, installing, and repairing electronic equipment, product, and componentsTroubleshoot and repair common fiber optic equipment and component issues to include advanced OTDR testing, reporting, and troubleshootingInstall demarcation enclosures, switches, and other telecom equipmentRoute premise cable both inside and outside of facilitiesCoordinate fiber activities with other disciplines and departments as necessaryMonitor and maintain min/max truck stock materialsResponsible for completing time and material (T&M) documentationComplete documentation to include record-keeping, billing, inventory, etc.Interact daily with customers and complete daily close of business (COB) reports Suggest and execute corrective actions to address problems affecting any fiber or fiber related equipmentGenerate trace reports and SEP (splice engineering package) filesLead complex fiber optic operations, outages, and/or restorationsCalculate fiber optic facility attenuation budgetResponsible for leading multiple crewsEnsure work is performed to engineering and design specificationsOversee 3rd party optical ground wire (OPGW) installationLead, mentor, and train field staffProvide feedback and input for employee performance reviews
