ResponsibilitiesJob Summary
The Senior Director of Engineering will provide strategic leadership for our Salesforce engineering organization, overseeing technical direction, architecture governance, and delivery excellence across our Health Cloud, Marketing Cloud, and Data Cloud implementations. This highly experienced software engineering leader will lead multiple engineering areas with a team of 1-5+ leaders. The role requires strong leadership skills, situational awareness, and the ability to communicate effectively with leaders and executives at all levels of the organization. This person will be expected to organize and oversee Capex and Opex budgets in their areas of ownership while optimizing teams and processes for maximum efficiency.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Ownership
Define and execute the technical vision and roadmap for our Salesforce ecosystem.Drive or participate in strategic process improvements enabling more efficient, effective delivery.Integrate product vision into technical roadmaps and lead conversations about the direction of major areas.Drive widespread consensus for adoption of strategic direction and inspire engineers.Display an ownership mindset by being accountable for and beyond the features and products in areas of responsibility.Collaborate with C-level executives to align engineering initiatives with business objectives.
Software Delivery
Lead an Agile software engineering organization to deliver software efficiently and effectively.Work closely with Product, Design, and Research teams on implementation priority and scope.Determine necessary headcount, skills, process flows, and structure to achieve current and future goals.Hold teams accountable to deliver on OKRs and influence outcomes on prioritized issues.Establish engineering KPIs and metrics to measure team performance and product quality.
Team Leadership & People Development
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing engineering organization.Provide performance reviews, mentor, and effectively coach to affect professional growth.Manage healthy engineering vendor relationships and working partnerships across teams.Drive a culture of innovation, teamwork, accountability, and ownership.Create strategies for succession planning and promote internal/external training opportunities.Build and scale engineering teams through effective hiring, onboarding, and retention strategies.
Technical Direction
Serve as an expert in technologies within the area of accountability.Track product roadmaps for SaaS platforms, aligning development tools with latest capabilities.Ensure best practice standards are regularly updated.Provide subject matter expertise on technology mix and ensure effective tools are used.Oversee architecture and design decisions across Health Cloud, Marketing Cloud, and Data Cloud.Balance technical debt management with feature delivery and innovation.
Operations
Ensure all teams in the domain are compliant on process and standards.Provide clear, concise, and timely status updates regarding engineering achievements and challenges.Oversee and organize Capex and Opex budgets in areas of ownership.Establish robust SDLC processes that ensure quality, security, and compliance.Drive adoption of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing.
Team Building
Communicate the organization's value externally via talks, blog posts, etc.Identify skill gaps and implement strategies to remediate.Guide the creation of content and communication around engineering best practices and processes.Coordinate closely with vendors and recruiting teams to implement hiring strategy.Attract and retain top talent.
Complexity of Work
High level of leadership, critical thinking and clear communication abilities that provide significant direction to the performance of multiple engineering teams. Able to navigate stressful environments with emotional intelligence and lead organizational-scale efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree highly preferredMinimum of 10 years of software engineering experience6-7 years leading technical teamsProven track record scaling technical teamsExperience with Health Cloud, Marketing Cloud, or Data Cloud implementationsStrong understanding of healthcare industry regulations (HIPAA, HITRUST)Significant leadership, technical, and cross-team problem-solving abilitiesRequirementsEducation:
