Job Location: Remote US

Anticipated Start Date: 10/27/2025

The US base salary range for this full-time position is provided below:

 

Senior: $243,750-$373,750

 

The range represents the amount bnsf | tech reasonably expects to pay for the position based on the level, scope, and responsibilities of the role.  Individual compensation and level of position offered is determined by the hiring location and additional factors including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. In addition to base pay and bonus eligibility, BNSF offers a comprehensive benefits package.

We’re building a modern internal platform that brings together virtual machines, containers, storage, data services, networking, observability, and developer experience, all managed as software. This platform spans multiple environments including data centers, edge systems, and cloud regions.

We’re hiring infrastructure and platform software engineers to help build, operate, and evolve this platform. You’ll join a focused team working on high-impact systems that enable developers to build and deploy safely, quickly, and efficiently.

 

Responsibilities

This is a senior-level engineering role focused on leading the design, development, and evolution of internal platforms, APIs, and automation services that streamline the software development lifecycle and improve developer productivity across BNSF’s hybrid cloud infrastructure.Architect and deliver scalable, reliable developer services including CI/CD pipelines, test infrastructure, canary and experimentation platforms, and internal toolingLead development of APIs and automation workflows that integrate infrastructure services across public cloud, private cloud, and edge environmentsDrive adoption of platform capabilities through developer-friendly interfaces, SDKs, and documentationDefine and implement strategies for developer productivity, including automation of repetitive tasks and frictionless onboardingCollaborate with engineering, SRE, infrastructure, and product teams to align platform capabilities with developer needsOwn observability and telemetry strategies for developer platforms using tools like Jaeger, Grafana Tempo, OpenTelemetryMentor engineers across levels and contribute to technical leadership through design reviews, RFCs, and incident retrospectivesPromote best practices in secure coding, version control, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-codeInfluence platform architecture and contribute to long-term technical strategy for developer experience

 

Basic Qualifications

10+ years of experience in software engineering and/or platform engineering rolesProven track record of building and operating internal developer platforms or services at scaleDeep expertise in CI/CD systems including GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ArgoCD, and GitOps workflowsStrong proficiency in Go, Python, or Java, and experience designing APIs and automation frameworksExperience with hybrid cloud infrastructure, container orchestration (K8s), service mesh, and infrastructure automationAdvanced knowledge of observability stacks and telemetry systems, including OpenTelemetry, Jaeger, Tempo, and custom toolingExperience with secrets management, identity and access control, and infrastructure security principlesStrong communication and collaboration skills, with experience influencing cross-functional teamsDemonstrated ability to mentor engineers and lead technical initiativesPassion for developer experience, open-source infrastructure, and sustainable platform design

 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience building and operating observability tools at digital native companies or public cloudsContributions to open-source projects that enhance developer workflowsExperience building and operating internal developer platforms or tools, including developer-friendly SDKs and APIsExperience with edge systems and hybrid environments.
