What you’ll do:
As our Database Developer IV, you will need to be a self-starter who partners well with others. This role is all about getting the job done, so you have a can/will do mentality about all tasks associated with getting phenomenal code and performance remediations out the door. You prioritize mentoring your teammates, and you ask for help when needed. Help build a critical part of Schwab’s growth in the Workplace market.
Build scalable platforms supporting critical workplace applications under the Retirement Plan Services organization supporting millions of participants.
Be a part of modernization initiatives, including API and foundational system improvements that enable faster, safer integration and partnerships
Improve platform stability, performance, and resilience to reduce risk and deliver seamless experiences at scale
Modernize legacy components to address high risk remediation and compliance while maintaining industry leading standards
Leverage AI to innovate processes and outcomes for maximum efficiency and quality.

What you haveTo ensure that we have fulfilled our promise of "challenging the status quo," this role has specific qualifications that successful candidates should have.
Required Qualifications
8+ years of hands-on experience as a SQL Server Database Developer in enterprise-scale environments
Current working experience with Schwab processes and systemsExpert-level proficiency in T-SQL and SQL Server development, including complex Stored Procedures, Functions, Views, and Triggers
Strong experience designing, developing, and maintaining high-performance database solutions
Proven expertise in logical and physical data modeling, relational database design, normalization, and schema optimization
Deep understanding of SQL Server internals, including transactions, isolation levels, locking, concurrency and error handling
Extensive experience with query performance tuning, indexing strategies, execution plan analysis, and troubleshooting performance bottlenecks
Ability to refactor and optimize legacy database code for scalability, maintainability, and performance
Proven experience with data migration projects, including legacy-to-modern platform migrations and cross-database migrations
Strong skills in data mapping, transformation, validation, reconciliation, and data quality management
Hands-on experience with ETL/ELT processes, bulk data loads, batch processing, and migration performance optimization
Ability to plan and execute migrations with minimal downtime and data integrity risk
Experience designing and optimizing database structures to support analytics, reporting, and BI workloads
Experience supporting or integrating with enterprise data warehouses and reporting platforms
Strong understanding of database security, roles, permissions, and least-privilege access models
Experience collaborating with application developers, architects, DBAs, and data engineering teams
Familiarity with version control, database deployment practices, and code review processes
Must have methods for problem solving, strong database experience, including index strategies, performance tuning and optimization, and stored procedures.
Must be able to create reports and write complex statements for large-scale databases.
Needs to be a good communicator (both written and verbal), be able to plan technical solutions, be self-motivated, and meet tight deadlines.
A commitment to regularly improving your technical and professional skills, learning emerging technologies and growing as valued team member
Leverage AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot etc.) to accelerate coding velocity, including leveraging custom Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers to extend AI context into our proprietary internal services and modernize team workflows.
Builds valuable documentation and communicates and influences effectively.
Familiarity with C#/.NET Core development.
Understanding of Agile software development principles, including experience participating in a Scrum-based delivery team
Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Proven excellent technical and business communication skills at various organizational levels
BA/BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, Cassandra, Cosmos DB, DynamoDB, or similar
Strong understanding of NoSQL data modeling patterns (document, key-value, column-family) and trade-offs versus relational databases
Experience integrating NoSQL and relational databases within enterprise application architectures
Knowledge of partitioning, sharding, replication, and eventual consistency concepts in NoSQL systems
