Job Description
 

Role Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Automation Engineer with deep expertise in Ignition SCADA (Gold Certified) and integration for laboratory and pilot lab equipment. This role is critical in designing, implementing, and maintaining automation systems that support a flexible, innovative, and compliant pharmaceutical environment.

Key responsibilities:

Lead the design, development, and deployment of automation solutions using the Ignition SCADA platform, with a focus on leveraging MQTT (Sparkplug) and advanced scripting capabilities.Develop and maintain Python-based automation scripts for data processing, system integration, and custom functionality within Ignition and other platforms.Integrate laboratory instruments and systems via APIs, ensuring seamless data flow and system interoperability across R&D environments.Implement and manage automation changes in both GMP and non-GMP environments, including hardware/software upgrades and vendor coordination.Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver automation projects that meet cost, quality, and timeline goals.Utilize Docker or Podman to containerize and manage automation applications for scalability and reliability.Administer containerized applications running in Linux environment.Drive digital transformation by piloting and implementing innovative automation and data solutions.Maintain comprehensive and compliant automation documentation (e.g., specifications, SOPs).Support validation efforts in collaboration with QA and ensure adherence to automation standards and procedures.Basic Qualifications:BS in Computer Science, Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university with at least 10 years of relevant experience.MS in Computer Science, Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university with at least 8 years of relevant experience.Preferred Qualifications:Gold Certified Ignition Engineer with extensive hands-on experience in:Ignition Core Modules (Perspective)MQTT (Sparkplug B)Familiar with Jython within IgnitionStrong Python programming skills, with experience in automation, data processing, and API integration.Experience with .NET/Visual Studio.Proven experience integrating various lab equipment and systems using standard or custom APIs.Experience with lab automation systems such as Unchained Labs, Hamilton, and Tecan is a plus.Familiarity with ISA-88 and ISA-95 standards.Experience with PLCs, i.e. Rockwell, Opto22, and industrial protocols (OPC UA, Modbus, Ethernet/IP).Proficiency in managing containerized applications using Docker or Podman.Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.Previous experience in the life sciences industry is a plus.Minimum of 7 years of relevant engineering experience.Must be able to work onsite at least 3 days per week.


 

The salary range for this position is: $182,070.00 - $235,620.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
