WGNO, the ABC affiliate in New Orleans, is Southeast Louisiana’s trusted source for local news, sports, and weather. It serves the city and 13 surrounding parishes with coverage that informs, inspires, and connects our community.

This internship is ideal for a college senior eager to gain real-world experience in sports journalism. The selected intern will receive hands-on training across various platforms, including on-air sports reporting, digital content production, and multimedia storytelling. This is a unique opportunity to build a solid foundation in both broadcast and digital sports coverage—inside a fast-paced, professional newsroom.

What You’ll Do as a Sports Intern at WGNO:

At WGNO Sports, we cover everything from Friday night high school football to college rivalries and professional teams. As our intern, you’ll be immersed in the fast-paced world of sports journalism and expected to:

Report, write, and edit compelling sports stories in line with Nexstar Media Group and Associated Press standardsAssist with shooting and editing highlights, interviews, and stand-upsPost and manage sports content on wgno.com, optimizing it for SEO and timelinessCreate engaging sports content for social media, including graphics and real-time updates during gamesPitch story ideas that spotlight athletes, teams, rivalries, and unique moments in the local sports worldEmbrace the challenge of covering breaking sports news and telling impactful feature storiesBe curious, ask questions, and always look for a fresh angleDemonstrate a strong work ethic and a passion for storytelling, especially in a sports contextUphold journalistic integrity and accuracy at all times

What We Expect from You:

A deep love for high school, college, and professional sportsStrong writing and communication skillsA willingness to learn newsroom systems and content management toolsBasic knowledge of editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere or similar)Comfort working with cameras, microphones, and field equipmentThe ability to collaborate in a deadline-driven, team-based environmentPhysical ability to carry equipment and work in fast-paced, often outdoor, sports settingsFlexibility to work evenings, weekends, and game daysAnd, of course, other duties as assigned—we’re a team and we jump in where needed!

Internship Details:

This is a non-paid internship designed specifically for college seniors seeking academic credit and real-world experience in sports journalism.Interns must be enrolled in a college or university and eligible to receive academic credit for the internship. All required documentation is the responsibility of the student.The number of credit hours earned will be determined by the intern’s academic advisor and institution.Interns will work directly with WGNO’s Sports Department, gaining experience in everything from high school and college coverage to professional team reporting.Sports Department leaders will oversee your progress, providing feedback, training, and a final written evaluation upon completion of the internship.Interns must commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week for 8 weeks, with flexibility to work some nights and weekends based on sports event schedules.This is a hands-on opportunity to contribute to Friday Night Football, Sportszone, and digital sports content across WGNO platforms.
