Quantity Surveyor Job DescriptionPosition OverviewThe Quantity Surveyor manages all costs relating to construction projects from initial calculations to final figures, ensuring projects are completed within budget while maintaining required standards.
Key ResponsibilitiesCost Management & Estimation The role involves preparing detailed cost estimates, bills of quantities, and tender documents for construction projects. You'll conduct feasibility studies and life cycle cost analysis to guide project decision-making, while managing and monitoring project budgets throughout all phases.
Contract Administration You'll prepare and analyze contractual documents, evaluate contractor and supplier bids, and administer construction contracts. This includes processing valuations, interim payments, and managing variations and change orders while ensuring compliance with contract terms.
Project Financial Control The position requires conducting cost analysis and value engineering exercises, preparing monthly cost reports and cash flow forecasts, and identifying cost-saving opportunities. You'll track project expenditures against budgets and manage risk through appropriate mitigation strategies.
Stakeholder Collaboration Working closely with project managers, architects, engineers, and contractors is essential. You'll provide cost advice during design development, participate in project meetings, and negotiate with contractors and suppliers to achieve optimal outcomes.
Documentation & Reporting The role involves maintaining accurate project cost records and documentation, preparing interim and final account statements, and producing detailed cost reports for clients and stakeholders. You'll also handle claims assessment and dispute resolution.
Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or related field. Professional certification (MRICS, CIQS, or equivalent) is highly desirable. 3-5 years of experience in quantity surveying or cost management within the construction industry is typically required.
Essential SkillsStrong numerical and analytical abilities, comprehensive knowledge of construction methods and materials, proficiency in cost estimating software and MS Excel, excellent contract law understanding, and effective communication skills for negotiation and stakeholder management.
