Special Education Teacher
Special Education Teacher (Mild–Moderate Support Needs) Location: Torrance, California Setting: Onsite, Elementary (K–5) Schedule: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week Compensation: $45/hour for certified teachers (local rate) Travel packages: Available for eligible non-local candidates Language: Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred Start: ASAP or per district calendar About the Role We are seeking a committed Special Education Teacher to serve elementary students with mild to moderate disabilities in an inclusive school environment in Torrance. The ideal candidate has a strong background in delivering specialized instruction, supporting IEP goals, and collaborating with school teams and families. Bilingual Spanish-speaking educators are highly encouraged to apply. Key Duties & ResponsibilitiesInstruction & Student Support + Provide specially designed instruction (SDI) aligned to IEP goals in reading, writing, math, social-emotional skills, and executive functioning. + Adapt and modify general education curriculum materials. + Implement evidence-based interventions and maintain consistent progress monitoring. IEP Case Management + Lead the development, updating, and implementation of IEPs. + Conduct assessments, write measurable goals, and determine appropriate accommodations and modifications. + Facilitate IEP meetings with families and multidisciplinary team members. Collaboration + Work closely with general education teachers in co-teaching and consultation settings. + Communicate regularly with related service providers such as speech therapists, OTs, PTs, school psychologists, and behavioral specialists. + Engage families with clear, culturally responsive communication (Spanish a strong asset). Behavior & Classroom Support + Create a structured, positive, and inclusive classroom environment. + Utilize PBIS-aligned behavior supports and data-driven behavior strategies. + Implement visual supports, routines, and de-escalation strategies as needed. Compliance & Professional Practice + Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with IDEA, Section 504, and district policies. + Protect student confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards. + Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and ongoing professional development. Education & Certification RequirementsRequired: + Bachelor’s degree or higher in Special Education or a related field. + California Education Specialist Instruction Credential – Mild/Moderate Support Needs (MMSN) or equivalent authorization. + EL Authorization (CLAD/BCLAD) or ability to obtain per district requirements. + TB clearance and successful background/fingerprint check. + Required California exam passage (CBEST and any additional district-required tests). Preferred: + Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency. + Experience supporting elementary grade students in an onsite setting. + Background with structured literacy approaches, UDL, or co-teaching models. + Familiarity with behavior support systems such as PBIS or restorative practices. Student Populations Served (Mild–Moderate) + Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD): dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia. + Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): mild–moderate support needs. + ADHD/Other Health Impairments (OHI). + Speech/Language impairments (SLI). + Mild behavioral or emotional regulation needs. Common Academic and Behavioral Challenges + Reading comprehension, phonics, and written expression difficulties. + Math reasoning and calculation challenges requiring scaffolds. + Attention, organization, and executive functioning deficits. + Social communication, peer interaction, and emotional regulation needs. + Need for accommodations such as extended time, guided notes, visual supports, and modified assignments. Work Hours & Compensation + Hours: 37.5 hours per week, onsite. + Compensation: $45/hour for California-certified teachers. + Travel Programs: Optional travel packages for non-local educators (details provided during screening).
