Full-Time Contract (W2)
Normal School Hours
Setting: In-person, on-site
Caseload: Elementary (K–8)
Pays: $45-$50 Per hour
About the Role
We’re seeking an experienced Special Education Teacher who holds an Adapted Physical Education (APE) Added Authorization to serve elementary (K–8) learners in an in-person setting. You’ll deliver specialized academic instruction and adapted PE services, collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, and support students’ IEP goals across inclusive and specialized environments.
What You’ll Do
+ Provide specialized academic instruction aligned to IEP goals for K–8 students.
+ Deliver Adapted Physical Education services and conduct educational assessments related to students’ physical education goals.
+ Collaborate with general education teachers, therapists, related service providers, and families to ensure services in the least restrictive environment. [ctc.ca.gov] (https://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/assignment-resources/special-education-credentials)
+ Maintain compliant documentation (IEPs, progress reports, assessment reports) and participate in IEP meetings.
+ Full-time: 35 hours/week
+ On-site only: This is an in-person position serving an elementary (K–8) caseload across general education and special education settings.
Required Education & Certifications (California)
1) Education Specialist Instruction Credential (Special Education)
California special education teachers must hold an Education Specialist Instruction Credential (two-tier structure: Preliminary, then Clear). The credential authorizes special education instruction and related services across settings such as general education classrooms, resource rooms, and special day classes (K–12/through age 22, depending on specialty).
Typical preliminary-level requirements (for CA-prepared candidates) include completing a Commission-approved Education Specialist program, and other state requirements (see TEACH California overview).
Note on foundational state requirements: California outlines baseline elements for teacher credentialing such as subject-matter competence and other components; candidates generally demonstrate these through approved exams/programs or coursework as permitted under current law and Commission guidance.
2) Adapted Physical Education (APE) Added Authorization (CL-623)
Because this role includes adapted PE services, candidates must hold an APE Added Authorization attached to an eligible base credential. The APE AA authorizes conducting educational assessments and delivering adapted PE to students (birth–22) who cannot participate in general PE as determined by the IEP.
APE AA eligibility pathways include:
+ A valid Education Specialist Instruction Credential (or certain general education PE-authorizing credentials) plus completion of a Commission-approved APE program.
+ For candidates whose base credential is not Single Subject PE: completion of 12 semester units in physical education, including at least 3 units each in kinesiology and motor development, alongside the APE program requirements.
+ California regulations specify that all individuals assigned to teach adapted PE must hold an APE authorization and complete a supervised field study within the Commission-approved program.
Preferred Experience & Skills
+ Experience serving elementary (K–8) students across inclusion and specialized settings.
+ Strong collaboration, data-driven instruction, and progress-monitoring skills.
+ Effective communication with families and IEP teams.
