We are seeking a skilled Software Development Manager to lead a cross-organizational tiger team driving a high-visibility S3-wide initiative. In this role, you will leverage your technical depth in large-scale distributed systems to solve complex problems with simple solutions for one of AWS's foundational services. Key job responsibilities - Lead the delivery of a cross-organizational initiative, working backwards from customer needs to create impactful solutions for S3's communication protocols while collaborating with stakeholders across the organization. - Lead and mentor a team of talented software engineers, creating structures that enable them to solve complex problems and deliver high-impact solutions while fostering their growth and professional development. - Own team-wide architectural decisions and technical direction for a high-visibility S3-wide initiative, ensuring quality software aligned with Amazon's engineering best practices while making appropriate trade-offs between tactical needs and strategic goals. - Create mechanisms and metrics that enable you to explain your team's performance and identify opportunities to improve customer experiences. - Partner with engineering leaders across S3 to identify and address complex technical challenges, evaluating downstream impacts and architectural cohesiveness. A day in the life You'll start your day collaborating with your team of talented software engineers, reviewing progress on critical components of S3's internal communication protocols. Throughout the day, you'll balance technical deep dives with strategic planning sessions, working across organizational boundaries to drive alignment on your high-visibility initiative. You'll mentor team members to foster their growth while ensuring they have the support needed to deliver complex solutions that meet S3's rigorous standards for security, durability, availability, and performance. Our team combines technical excellence with collaborative problem-solving to deliver innovations across this foundational AWS service. Basic Qualifications - 2+ years of engineering team management experience - 5+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience - 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience - 3+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience - Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations - Experience partnering with product or program management teams Preferred Qualifications - Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy - Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status. Salary is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
