Amazon Global-focused Operations Technology Solutions (ARTS) team is seeking a Software Development Manager (SDM). This manager will lead a team of developers to innovate and automate Amazon IN Operations and beyond! The team's scope is extensive; the projects could involve anything that will improve Amazon Operations efficiency in India, Japan, China, Mexico, Brazil, and more.
This is a people management position, managing technical people.
The candidate should have:
- An extensive background in software development to relate and coach with their directs. They will also need to interact with PMs without needing developers in the early stages.
- Experience leading and growing a team of ~10 developers. This role delegates and mentors. It is not an IC development role.
- An insistence on high standards; rigorously advocating software engineering best practices.
- Strong communication skills to bridge the gap between tech and business. They will interact with both developers, technical managers, product managers, and customers.
Key job responsibilities
- Work with developers and project management to define project roadmaps. Follow through on plans to deliver high-quality solutions on schedule.
- Career management and development of direct reports. This includes 1:1s and tracking of career goals.
- Lead with empathy. The candidate will lead difficult conversations such as performance, compensation, policies, and cross-team priority alignment.
- Setting and maintaining high software engineering standards. Code, design, security, privacy, and operational readiness reviews are foundational.
- Be involved in yearly planning and setting long-term team vision.
- Communicate effectively through both verbal and written mediums.
- Make high judgment tradeoffs on competing priorities when necessary.
A day in the life
- Start of Day: Check emails and other communication channels from over the night. Follow-up as necessary.
- Morning 1:1s while having coffee in the lounge
- Meet with a project manager to discuss project blockers and possible resolutions
- Attend a design review after lunch, prompting discussion and giving feedback
- Review business requirements for an upcoming project
