The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) serves some of Orange County’s most vulnerable student populations and provides support and mandated fiscal oversight to 28 school districts serving more than 600 schools and approximately 475,000 students. In addition to providing direct instruction to students through its own alternative and special education programs, OCDE administers an array of programs and services that are critical to the operations of local school districts and community colleges, facilitating professional development, legal guidance, payroll, career and technical education support, high-speed internet access, Local Control and Accountability Plan assistance and approval, resources for families, and student enrichment. OCDE’s vision is that “Orange County students will lead the nation in college and career readiness and success.” Department staff are working to achieve this goal in collaboration with educators at all levels of student development, from early childhood through higher education, and in partnership with families, businesses and community organizations.

Job Summary Job Summary

OCDE recognizes the importance of health and its relationship to learning and academic achievement. The OCDE Health, Safety, and Prevention team leads health education and prevention services that build the knowledge and skills of students to ensure their physical, mental, and social-emotional well-being. Our Youth Substance Use Prevention (YSUP) program is funded by the OC Health Care Agency to provide no-cost prevention services to schools and community-based organizations across central Orange County. These services include facilitating multi-session evidence-based curricula and single-session workshops for students in grades 4-9; providing parent and caregiver workshops on current trends and prevention strategies; training and supporting youth to implement prevention projects like media campaigns and peer workshops; and engaging schools, businesses, and other stakeholders in identifying and addressing local needs related to youth substance use. We are currently seeking a passionate and dynamic individual to work as a short-term Associate Project Assistant. The selected candidate will provide alcohol and other drug prevention workshops and lessons, support youth-led prevention activities, conduct program promotion and outreach, and contribute to reports required by funding agencies. THIS POSITION IS GRANT-FUNDED THROUGH JUNE 2026.

Candidates Should Have Experience With: • Facilitating engaging workshops for youth and families related to substance use prevention or other health education topics. • Developing written and visual content for presentation slides, educational materials, websites, and/or social media. • Promoting and scheduling trainings and presentations with schools, students, parent groups, and youth-serving organizations.

Comments and Other Information Before receiving authorization to work in this position, the individual selected will be required to provide a current negative TB authorization, within the last 60 days, and submit fingerprints for the purpose of conducting a confidential background investigation and record check. The tests are arranged and paid for by OCDE. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires employers to verify the employability of all new employees. Before the Department will finalize an offer of employment, the candidate selected will be required to show original documents which establish both the individual’s identity and employment authorization.
