Job Description The Shipfitter plays a critical role in the construction, repair, and modification of ship structures, ensuring vessels meet stringent safety, quality, and operational standards. This position involves interpreting complex blueprints and technical drawings to plan and execute precise layout, cutting, and fitting operations. Shipfitters work with a variety of structural components, including hulls, bulkheads, and decks, and are responsible for fabricating and installing fixtures, jigs, and supports to exact tolerances. Shipfitters must also be able to set up flux core weld machines and tack weld plates that will undergo visual testing (VT) and break testing, ensuring compliance with quality and structural integrity requirements. In addition to technical expertise, the Shipfitter must maintain strict adherence to safety protocols, PPE requirements, and quality assurance procedures. The role demands strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with supervisors and production leads. Shipfitters are expected to mentor junior craftsmen, demonstrate flexibility by performing tasks outside their primary trade, and contribute to a clean and organized work environment. Travel and overtime may be required to meet project deadlines and operational needs. Skills and Requirements Work Experience: Minimum of 5+ years of experience as a Shipfitter, or completion of an accredited Apprenticeship Program or possession of a Journeyman Certificate, which can be accepted in lieu of work experience. •Must have experience in new construction •Proficient in setting up and operating various portable and hand tools used in the trade, including plasma cutting machines and oxy/fuel equipment. •Advanced knowledge of shipboard plate systems (hull, deck, bulkhead), including repair and installation practices, procedures, alignments, and material requirements. Skilled in blueprint reading and interpretation, and familiar with MILSPEC requirements. •Ability to fit structural components to meet tolerance requirements. •Possess Tack and Fillet Weld qualifications (FCAW/SMAW). •Must be able to obtain access to military bases and various government facilities. *Must have reliable transportation* Required Equipment: Steel toe boots Long pants Physical Demands: Involves heavy lifting, frequent stooping, bending, crawling, reaching and possible working assignments in overhead structures, confined spaces or beneath machinery either indoors or outdoors in the elements and noisy conditions. Occasional lifting to 50+ pounds.
