Responsibilities:
The Winder / Shaft Fitter will be responsible for investigating, diagnosing, and performing trade-related maintenance and repairs on equipment and machinery in accordance with sound engineering practices and equipment specifications.
The incumbent must have solid knowledge and experience in mine hoists and hoist auxiliary components, including heavy winder components, attachments, headgear components, ESCORT spring nest high-pressure braking systems, conveyances, stabilizers, mechanical connections, as well as roller and plain bearings.
In addition to mine hoists, the Winder Fitter must possess sound knowledge of shaft barrel equipment and infrastructure, and all auxiliary hoist equipment associated with shaft operations.
Perform inspections in accordance with mine standards and OEM specifications.
Ensure all equipment complies with legislative requirements and mine standards.
Report defects and breakdowns to the relevant section head.
Repair equipment and machinery in line with maintenance standards and procedures.
Communicate with supervisors and relevant personnel regarding maintenance activities and equipment availability.
Identify spare parts requirements and initiate orders in accordance with departmental needs.
Develop, improve, construct, and install related equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Maintain and enhance the planned maintenance system.
Train team members in key areas of responsibility to promote skills development and succession planning.
Adhere to mine policies and procedures, and comply with all safety, health, and environmental standards.
Be available for standby, call-out duties, and overtime as required.
Be willing and able to work shifts as per operational demands.
Qualification Requirements:
High School Certificate or equivalent
Trade Certificate / National Certificate in Fitting and Turning, Mechanical Fitting
Experience and Skills Requirements:
Maintenance skill and hydraulic
Proven experience in shaft maintenance — including winder installations, headgear maintenance, hoisting systems, and shaft steelwork.
Knowledge of mechanical assembly, alignment, lubrication, and safety procedures.
Understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and mechanical schematics.
Familiarity with lock-out and tag-out (LOTO) safety systems.
Basic Rigging and Slinging certificate (advantageous).
Working at Heights and Confined Space Entry certificates (depending on the mine’s safety regulations).
First Aid / Basic Mine Safety Training (as per site requirements).
Usually 3–5 years of practical experience as a Fitter, with at least 1–2 years in shaft or hoist maintenance preferred.
Experience working in underground mining or heavy industrial environments is highly valued.
Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and in teams.
Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
