The Role
We’re seeking a forward-thinking Senior System Safety Engineer to lead the development and execution of safety cases for torque distribution and torque biasing systems. This role focuses on mechatronic solutions—mechanical systems controlled by software—rather than purely mechanical designs.
Technologies supported include:
All-wheel drive systems for electric and hybrid vehicles
Electronic limited slip differentials
Traction control systems
Your work will directly impact vehicle safety and support GM’s vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion.
As a technical leader, you’ll guide a team of System Safety Engineers, ensuring timely, high-quality delivery of safety designs aligned across GM and its suppliers. You’ll apply deep expertise in functional safety and GM’s Systems Engineering and Safety processes to shape the technical direction of torque-related safety systems.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
Lead a technical team of System Safety Engineers to develop system safety cases for responsible features and systems
Ensure GM's System Safety Process is adhered to with quality and attention to detail within the team.
Employ varied analysis techniques including hazard analysis, fault tree analysis, interface analysis, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), and software safety analysis, as needed.
Cooperate with Systems Engineers to integrate safety requirements into technical specifications to ensure a coordinated design.
Work cross functionally within GM to ensure system level safety design is realized and continuously improved.
Guide development of external suppliers to facilitate timely delivery of safety critical system content.
Provide system safety expertise and problem solving to vehicle program teams and leadership, including safety critical issue resolution and safety case guidance.
Lead system safety innovation on the team to explore new tools, techniques, and analysis (ex. model based engineering, virtual testing, etc.).
Mentor & develop internal and external organizational partners (including Global teams) on safety critical system and process-specific knowledge
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, or IT
5 years of relevant engineering experience
Ability to understand complex technical systems.
Basic project management skills.
Ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship to diverse global teams.
Familiarity with ISO 26262 or other functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 62304, or DO-178C.
Hands-on experience with hazard analysis, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA), software safety analysis, or other safety analysis tools and techniques.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred qualifications)
Master's Degree
Engineering experience working with torque distribution, propulsion, or vehicle dynamics systems.
Familiar with vehicle dynamics and how vehicle actuators and sensors work together to balance vehicle performance and safety in various conditions.
Familiar with embedded controller system design and communication networks, automotive or otherwise.
