The Senior Staff Controls Engineer for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics is responsible for technical contributions focusing on state of the art and innovative automation solutions including equipment development, controls, and design through implementation for global operations. The primary role for this position would include large scale automated equipment related to filling, capping, labeling, inspection, and advanced material handling functionality.
This position is part of the Global system test and innovation engineering department located in Chaska, MN and will be responsible for multisite equipment deployment opportunities. At Beckman Coulter, our vision is to relentlessly reimagine healthcare, one diagnosis at a time.
You will be a part of the Equipment Automation team and report to the Automation Engineering Manager responsible for equipment automation design and implementation, as well as innovative process technologies for continuous improvement for global operations. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Collaborate cross-functionally with Beckman factories and contracted suppliers to develop user requirement specifications (URS), automation concepts, and architectural-level designs for large-scale equipment.Lead end-to-end project execution, including budgeting, scheduling, design, implementation, installation, troubleshooting, and documentation, while ensuring regulatory compliance.Design and program industrial control systems, such as PLCs, robotics, HMIs, vision systems, and motion controls, and ensure supplier deliverables meet technical standards.Establish and promote controls engineering best practices across procurement, design, installation, and FAT/SAT processes, including quality reviews and technical studies.Communicate effectively with plant teams to support troubleshooting and translate operational challenges into technical solutions.The essential requirements of the job include:
Educational Background: Bachelor’s in Engineering or Mechatronics/Automation with 9+ years of experience, or Master’s with 7+ years.Technical Expertise: Proficient in PLC programming (ladder logic & structured text), and experienced with AC/DC drives, servo motors, HMIs, machine vision, and safety systems.Project Leadership: Skilled in managing automation projects, including debugging, installation, and training aligned with project specs.Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication, capable of simplifying complex technical concepts for stakeholders.Continuous Improvement: Demonstrates a proactive mindset for process optimization and problem-solving.It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
Hands-on experience with complex mechanical systems including CAD modeling.
Experience with Rockwell Automation ControlLogix family of programmable controllers.
Digital integration leveraging PLC & SCADA systems including basic understanding of computer networking, TCP/IP, and industrial fieldbus architectures such as Ethernet I/P.
Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements:
Must be able to travel up to 30% to both Beckman and supplier/vendor sites.
The salary range for this role is $150K-$175K. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future.
This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
