Job Description

Senior Automation Engineer - Software

Location: Hyderabad, India

Division: Chemical Analysis Division

Reports To: Senior Manager CAD Projects

Do you have a passion for innovative ideas and ground-breaking discoveries?

With over $1 billion invested annually in R&D, at Thermo Fisher Scientific you’ll help solve some of the world’s toughest challenges — from giving cancer patients hope, ensuring safe drinking water, and supporting law enforcement through forensics. We empower our teams to put science into meaningful action and provide the autonomy, resources, and tools needed to take science a step beyond.

Chemical Analysis Division

The Chemical Analysis Division provides a broad mix of analytical instruments and services across diverse markets including Safety & Security, Environmental, Food Safety, Life Sciences, Medical, Energy, and Minerals & Mining. Our instruments are deployed globally — in the field and on the line — in dynamic environments where customers depend on quality, reliability, and ease of use. With more than 2,000 colleagues worldwide, we deliver solutions that enable confident, on-the-spot decision-making.

How You Will Make an Impact

As an Automation Engineer, you will play a hands-on role in enabling our analytical instruments — including FTIR, Raman, and radiation-based systems — to integrate seamlessly into automated workflows used in laboratories, pilot plants, and full-scale manufacturing environments. Working from an established automation roadmap, you will focus on technical implementation, integration, and prototyping rather than strategy development.

You will collaborate with electrical, mechanical, software, and scientific teams across Europe, India, China, and the US to implement automation capabilities that support early customer pilots, demonstrations, and internal development activities. Your work will directly help accelerate automation adoption across product lines and enable scalable, reliable instrument connectivity.

Key Responsibilities

Implement and test instrument automation integrations following defined specifications and communication standards.Configure connectivity using OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus, REST APIs, or other common industrial protocols.Build automation demos, prototypes, and pilot systems involving instruments, robotics, sensors, and digital tools.Develop reusable scripts, templates, and configuration packages that support consistent automation integration across product lines.Collaborate with internal automation teams (e.g., Spinnaker, AMRs, FastTrak) to assemble and validate end-to-end automated workflows.Troubleshoot hardware/software integration issues and document repeatable processes for broader engineering use.Support sales, field teams, and applications engineers by preparing demo systems and technical enablement materials.Provide input on how instruments could be easier to automate, without owning strategic roadmap decisions.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Automation, or related field.3–6 years of experience in automation engineering, robotics integration, industrial controls, or lab automation.Hands-on experience working with instruments, sensors, PLCs, or robotic systems.Practical experience with OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus, REST APIs, or similar connectivity standards.Familiarity with SCADA/DCS platforms (DeltaV, Rockwell, Siemens, Ignition) or workflow tools (LIMS, Momentum) is a plus.Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary, matrixed environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Experience with Agile and/or Waterfall development methodologies.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Understanding of ISA-88/95 models and integration principles.Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, GitHub, or similar tools.Curiosity, problem-solving mindset, and enthusiasm for practical engineering work.Strong teamwork and project management skills with the ability to lead portions of integration efforts.

What You’ll Deliver

Working, tested instrument automation integrations aligned with Thermo Fisher automation standards.Demo systems and prototypes that help internal teams and customers visualize automation capabilities.Reusable scripts, configurations, and documentation supporting Modbus, OPC UA, MQTT, and REST integrations.Practical insights that help evolve our automation framework and future instrument designs.
