Senior Software Dev Engineer, JP Manga
Ready to shape how fans in Japan discover, read, and obsess over their next favorite manga? Join our JP Manga team in our Tokyo office, where we build the digital experiences that connect manga lovers with the content they love across mobile and web.

We're investing heavily in the reading experience for the next generation of manga readers, and mobile is at the center of it. That means building rich, engagement-driven, customer-facing software (discovery, reading, personalization, and more) with the craft and performance bar of an app customers open every day. We're early in this investment and moving fast, so a Senior Engineer joining now will leave fingerprints on the architecture for years.

We're looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer with deep native mobile expertise in iOS (Swift) and/or Android (Kotlin), or equivalent depth in a cross-platform framework like React Native, who wants to own the technical direction of customer-facing software at Amazon scale, set the bar for craft and operational excellence, and grow the engineers around them.

At Amazon, you'll work alongside the latest AI and GenAI tools that are increasingly woven into how teams operate: from AI-powered capabilities that accelerate decision-making, to Generative AI that helps you focus on work that truly matters. You'll have opportunities and resources to develop AI fluency at your own pace, with continuous learning built into the culture.

Key job responsibilities
As a Senior SDE on our team, you will:

- Own the technical design and delivery of foundational, customer-facing experiences such as discovery surfaces, reading, personalization, and the architectural primitives other features build on.
- Drive cross-cutting architecture decisions for native mobile clients (iOS and Android): app architecture, navigation, state management, on-device persistence, and integration with embedded web content.
- Set and raise the bar for performance, reliability, and craft on experiences customers open daily, including fast cold start, smooth scrolling through dense content, and low-latency reading.
- Lead the integration between the mobile client and our backend and platform services, partnering with backend engineers on contracts and trade-offs.
- Champion AI-first development on the team. We build with modern AI-assisted tooling, and you'll push how we apply it across coding, test generation, review, and debugging to accelerate delivery without sacrificing quality.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship through design reviews, code reviews, pairing, and growing your peer engineers, and represent our team's technical perspective in cross-team design alignment.
- Drive operational excellence: observability, CI/CD, release readiness, on-call response, and continuous improvement of the surfaces you own.

A day in the life
In this role you will:

- Write and review production Swift and/or Kotlin for reading features used by manga fans across Japan.
- Profile and tune the experiences customers feel most: cold start, scroll performance through dense manga and Fliptoon pages, image loading, and time to first page.
- Debug the hard, cross-layer problems, from client state and on-device persistence to the integration seams with backend services and embedded web content.
- Use AI-assisted tools in your own work and show teammates where they speed up coding, tests, review, and debugging.
- Sit in design and code reviews with product, UX, and partner tech teams, making the architectural calls that keep a fast-moving, multi-workstream effort coherent and shippable.
- Respond to production issues on the surfaces you own, root cause them, and fix forward.

About the team
Our team, located in Tokyo, is building the next-generation manga experience for Japanese customers. We own key pillars of JP Manga, including the surfaces where customers discover, read, and engage with manga across mobile and web. We balance new-product development with responsible stewardship of production systems that serve readers today, and we work backwards from customers to build a reading experience people open out of habit.
