Senior Scientist, Chemical Design & Synthesis (CDS)

Summary of Responsibilities:

 

This role is a critical part of Lubrizol’s Chemical Design & Synthesis (CDS) organization, focused on inventing, designing, characterizing, and developing new molecules, with a specific emphasis on hyperdispersant chemistries for Paints & Coatings applications. The successful candidate will combine hands-on research expertise with leadership skills to guide a small technical team and ensure safe, efficient laboratory operations.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Innovation & Research

Invent, design, and synthesize novel molecules and polymeric dispersants. Perform hands-on laboratory work, including synthesis, characterization, and testing. Develop structure–performance relationships to guide formulation and product development. Conduct independent synthetic research in a multidisciplinary environment.

Laboratory Leadership

Lead and mentor a small team (1–3 junior chemists), fostering technical growth and collaboration. Oversee daily synthesis laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with Lubrizol’s HSES standards and continuous improvement initiatives. Champion safe operations in corporate technology labs at the Singapore site and maintain strong engagement with local HSES leadership.

Communication & Collaboration

Document, interpret, and communicate experimental results to colleagues, sponsors, and customers. Collaborate effectively within a matrixed organization, working across global teams and business units.

 

Requirements & Qualifications

 

Doctoral degree in Organic or Polymer Chemistry 5-10 years of industrial experience in chemical design, synthesis, and product development of organic and/or polymeric compounds Proven ability to lead small technical teams and deliver results through collaboration Background in controlled/living polymerization techniques preferred Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills Strong communication abilities, with fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese
