Design Systems Team

The American Express Design System saves teams time and resources by providing ready to use front-end components and design guidelines that bring consistency to the American Express customer journey. Containing over 300 components and styles, DS supports multiple frameworks and is looking to enhance their product offerings. Carefully maintained guidelines provide clear rules, as well as best practices to help teams adopt the design system and set the standard in design across the enterprise. By providing DS to the entire enterprise, we can dramatically improve teams’ strategic agility, speed to market, transparency, and the business value they drive.

The library and guidelines are maintained by a team of designers, product managers, and engineers that are constantly working to evolve the library through user research, testing, and ideation.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Native Mobile Designer to help shape and scale our enterprise design system across iOS and Android. This role sits at the intersection of design craft, platform expertise, and systems thinking. You will ensure our mobile experiences feel unmistakably native, accessible, and cohesive—while remaining flexible enough to support dozens of teams and products.

As a senior designer within a large design systems organization, you will influence standards, components, and tooling that impact millions of users and hundreds of designers and engineers.

What You will Do

Design, evolve, and maintain native iOS and Android components and templates within the design system

Apply deep knowledge of Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) and Material Design to ensure platform-appropriate layouts, interactions, and motion

Translate complex product requirements into scalable, reusable mobile system solutions

Partner closely with mobile engineers, product designers and product managers to ensure high-fidelity implementation in native code

Build and maintain Figma libraries (components, variants, auto layout, variables, tokens) optimized for mobile design workflows

Contribute to system governance and quality standards, reviewing contributions for usability, accessibility, and platform alignment

Create and maintain clear system documentation, including usage guidance, platform-specific considerations, and edge cases

Advocate for accessibility, performance, and usability best practices in mobile design

Mentor other designers and help raise the bar for mobile design craft across the organization

Present to leadership and articulate design system decisions, requirements, releases, onboarding to partners across the organization

What We are Looking For

7+ years of experience in digital product design, with significant focus on native mobile design

Proven experience designing for both iOS and Android (not responsive web only)

Strong working knowledge of Apple HIG and Material Design, including platform conventions and constraints

Advanced Figma expertise, including component architecture, variants, auto layout, variables/design tokens, and library management

Experience contributing to or maintaining a design system at scale in a complex, multi-product environment

Ability to think systemically while maintaining a high bar for interaction design, layout precision, and visual polish

Strong presentation and collaboration skills with engineers and an understanding of how design decisions translate to native implementation

Clear communicator who can articulate design rationale and tradeoffs

Must have a team mindset and be able to take direction from leadership

Nice to Have

Experience supporting multiple brands or themes within a single design system

Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG and platform-specific guidelines)

Experience with design tokens, theming, or design-to-code workflows

Prior mentorship or informal leadership experience within design teams

Motion and Animation experience is a plus

Why This Role Matters

This role has an enterprise-level impact. The components and standards you help define will shape how mobile products are designed and built across the organization. Your work will enable teams to move faster while delivering consistent, high-quality native mobile experiences at scale.

An online portfolio demonstrating samples of design deliverables is required to apply for this role.
