The New York Times is continuing to expand its video journalism, identifying compelling visual stories across the depth and breadth of our report. We showcase the expertise of Times journalists on-camera, share urgent news updates, produce on-the-ground reporting, pioneering Visual Investigations, and video podcasts.

We're looking for an experienced manager and video journalist to lead a versatile team of video journalists creating groundbreaking, short-form digital journalism. You will oversee work that ranges from breaking news and enterprise to Reporter Videos, investigations and interactives. You have experience managing editorial and technical crews in the field in dynamic, fast-moving and hostile news environments. You have a proven ability to drive stories and anticipate which news events warrant deploying.

You are versatile and comfortable with the dynamic landscape of digital news video and the evolving needs of the video department. You will work in close collaboration with the Washington, D.C. bureau to cover the current administration, while also managing a team of field producers who regularly deploy for urgent breaking news and short-form enterprise.

You have impeccable news judgment and can work autonomously to identify critical stories, vet reporting, and structure powerful video both on and off platform. Experience making sound editorial decisions and working collaboratively with other desks and beat-specific reporters is essential. You should have proven experience reporting on domestic politics as well as US and global news.

You are a strong leader who is eager to motivate and inspire teams, and innovate. You are an excellent collaborator, who will work with The Times' D.C.-based leadership to drive video coverage.

This is an in-office position, based in Washington, D.C. or New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities: Drive innovative and exclusive stories and news coverage in a range of video formats. Oversee a team of video journalists that regularly deploys during major news moments and for enterprise stories. Manage, initiate and plan for complex and high-risk deployments and coverage of planned news events. Work in close collaboration with The Times' Washington D.C. bureau to identify stories which should be made in video or include video reporting. Assign, drive and provide feedback on stories. Draw ideas from a range of video sources, including wire services, UGC, eyewitness video, archival footage, motion graphics, and originally-shot footage. Help guide breaking news coverage. Manage teams that produce live journalism, Reporter Videos and originally reported visual stories, and foster experiments with new video concepts and strategies. Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. You will report to video leadership in D.C. Basic Qualifications: 8+ years of experience in digital or broadcast news. 4+ years of experience as a people manager, guiding the work and careers of video journalists or newsroom teams. Track record managing reporters and video journalists in the field during deployments. Demonstrated deep command of a variety of video sources, including wire services, UGC, archival footage, motion graphics, and original footage. Understanding of mainstream and emerging social channels. Preferred Qualifications: Experience overseeing geolocation and UGC verification work. Experience developing and editing visual material for social platforms. Expert knowledge of current events with advanced level experience covering politics and breaking news stories in the US and internationally. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including giving feedback clearly and effectively. Familiar with digital storytelling formats. Flexibility to work extended hours and some weekends. Able to meet and make quick decisions under deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news environment.
