The Integrated Materials & Structures Technology Team within Boeing Technology Innovation (BTI) is seeking an Senior Engineer – Composites Materials, Process, & Physics Engineer (MP&P) to join our team in Berkeley, MO. This team is part of the Composites, Materials, & Structures organization within BTI. This group has a dual mission to 1) Execute Research and Development in the technical area of next-generation thermoset composites, with a particular focus on Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) relevant materials and 2) Develop and mature applications for these new materials through advanced design and manufacturing demonstrator programs to de-risk and accelerate adoption by BDS programs.
This experienced engineer will lead material selection, process development, characterization, and troubleshooting of polymer matrix and fiber-reinforced composite systems for aerospace applications. They also will be asked to lead manufacturing risk reduction demonstration programs to de-risk and accelerate adoption of new composite materials and manufacturing processes for BDS programs. This role offers hands-on exposure to lab-scale manufacturing processes, mechanical and physical/chemical testing, data analysis, and cross-functional project work with early career and senior engineers.
Position Responsibilities:
Lead the development and optimization of composite materials—prepregs, adhesives, and core materials—and related consumablesLead the define and validation of manufacturing processes (e.g., layup, curing/autoclave/out-of-autoclave processing, consolidation) to be used on production programsLead a team of MP&P engineers to collect, analyze, and summarize experimental data; review and approve test reports and present findings to broadly across the company and externallyDevelop and maintain process documentation, work instructions, and process control plans for production transitionsLead root-cause investigations and corrective actions for material and process related nonconformancesLead supplier evaluations and material qualification activitiesShape Contract Research and Development and internally funded research and development programs focused on maturing composite technologies for BDS programsFollow safety, quality and environmental procedures in the lab and manufacturing areasBasic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience):
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry9+ years of experience in new Material development and insertion; composite manufacturing process developmentPreferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
Advanced Engineering degreeDeep understanding of composite materials and processing methodsStrong knowledge of standard materials testing methodsStrong knowledge of composite design considerations and failure modesAbility to read, understand, and interpret engineering drawings and specificationsKnowledge of responsibilities and tasks performed by various engineering departments/disciplines; knowledge of the interaction between departments/disciplines and how their products/processes affect one another and impact non-engineering processesStrong problem solving and experimental skills; ability to apply knowledge of materials engineering and scientific principles to develop, design, analyze, test, and validate solutions for complex systems, sub-systems and designsStrong written and verbal communication skills; able to prepare clear test reports and presentationsExperience mentoring and training early career engineersProficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); experience with data analysis toolsWillingness to work in lab/manufacturing environmentsTravel: 10%

Summary Pay Range: Senior $ 140,250 -189,750
