Highlights of the job

We are hiring a full-time, permanent Senior Manager, Transmission Engineering position working out of Edmonton, AB.

 

The Senior Manager, Transmission Engineering leads all aspects of transmission system design, including substations, aerial and underground lines, protection and control, SCADA, communications, and drafting. This role is also responsible for managing a multidisciplinary team of managers, engineers, technologists, and drafters, ensuring high-quality, reliable engineering solutions that align with EPCOR’s strategic goals.

What you’d be responsible for

Planning 

Develop and execute a strategic engineering resource plan to support transmission projects over a 3–5 year horizonDefine annual priorities and goals aligned with EPCOR’s long-term transmission strategyCollaborate with AESO and internal teams to balance system reliability, cost, and riskIdentify and implement new technologies and tools to enhance design quality and efficiencyCreate and maintain engineering philosophies, standards, templates, guidelines and processes to ensure consistency and excellenceStrategically plan and manage budgets to support growth, lifecycle upgrades, and performance improvement initiatives

 

Operational Excellence

Monitor emerging technologies and industry practices to identify opportunities for innovation and performance improvementRefine engineering standards and processes using lessons learned from past projects to drive continuous improvementLead change management initiatives to enhance organizational readiness and ensure successful implementation of improvements

 

Execution

Ensure engineering resources are effectively allocated to meet project timelines while maintaining safety, efficiency, work-life balance and minimizing overtimeProvide clear direction and adjust priorities as needed to ensure successful execution of the business planMonitor performance metrics and implement corrective actions to resolve issues and improve delivery outcomes

 

Talent

Hire, engage, and develop an industry-leading team of engineers, technologists, and draftersSet clear performance expectations, provide coaching, and support career growth and succession planningMaximize training opportunities and assign work that challenges and builds team capabilities

 

Relationships and Collaboration

Build and maintain strong cross-functional relationships to support project execution, problem-solving, and alignment across teamsProvide technical insights and foster teamwork to drive integrated solutions and support strategic decision-makingWhat’s required to be successfulProfessional Engineer (P. Eng) with B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering 15+ years of experience in transmission designIn depth knowledge of IEEE, CIGRE, Alberta Electric Utility Code, and electrical utility standardsExperienced in transmission systems including planning, design, repair and maintenanceCapital project & asset management experience in TransmissionExpertise in P&C relaying, SCADA, communications, aerial and underground lines, and substation apparatus design and layoutsExtensive knowledge on all types of substation equipment and on all associated electrical utility operations spanning multiple business unitsStrong organizational skills, problem solving, and time management skillsAdvanced interpersonal skills to interface with all levels in the organizationProven ability to lead teams, develop talent, and drive strategic outcomesAbility to proactively identify future business risks, opportunities, and challenges to inform long-term planning and decision-makingAbility to influence other groups (e.g. trades personnel not directly reporting but required for construction, commissioning and troubleshooting)Other important facts about this job
