Senior Manager, Rights & Co-Editions
Job Description:

NOTE: This role is based in NYC and requires a minimum of three days a week in the SoHo, NY office.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Senior Manager, Rights & Co-Editions leads the day-to-day operations and strategic execution of Scholastic’s New York-based Rights team. This role is responsible for driving international licensing and co-edition sales across multiple territories, managing high-value publishing partnerships, and supporting the Senior Director / SVP in delivering revenue growth and operational excellence. The Senior Manager serves as a key liaison between the NYC Rights team and Scholastic’s global network of agents and publishing partners.

This position includes full line management of a growing NYC-based team—currently comprising 3–5 staff—and oversight of freelance consultants and external contributors as needed. The role is responsible for ensuring the team delivers on ambitious sales targets while maintaining Scholastic’s reputation for excellence in international publishing.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Rights Strategy & Execution
Lead the NYC Rights team in developing and executing market-specific strategies for translation rights and co-editions, with a focus on revenue growth, brand alignment, and operational efficiency.

Client & Partner Management
Manage relationships with international publishers and agents. Negotiate complex licensing and co-edition deals, and oversee strategic participation in major international book fairs (e.g., Bologna, Frankfurt) to support long-term business development and brand positioning.

Team Leadership & Development
Provide direct line management to NYC-based Rights staff and oversee freelance consultants. Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture and support professional development across a team that may expand over time.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Editorial, Design, Manufacturing, and Legal teams in New York to ensure seamless execution of rights deals and co-edition schedules. Act as a central connector between Rights and other publishing functions to align priorities and timelines.

Market Intelligence & Financial Reporting
Monitor global publishing trends and provide insights to inform rights strategy and content development. Own all financial reporting for the NYC Rights team, including budgeting, forecasting, and monthly performance tracking. Partner with Finance to ensure accuracy and transparency across all revenue streams.

IP Protection & Policy Compliance
Support Scholastic’s IP policies and ensure basic compliance across rights transactions, escalating complex matters to the VP and Legal as needed.

Geographic Reach: International, managed from NYC

Revenue Influence: Contributes to $14M+ in gross rights/co-edition sales

Managerial Oversight: Full line management of NYC-based team (currently 3–5 staff); oversight of freelance/consultant contributors with potential for future growth

Qualifications

HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred

Experience: 10–15 years in international rights, co-editions, or global publishing strategy

Skills & Attributes:

Proven success in rights sales and licensing negotiations

Strong leadership and team development skills

Deep understanding of international publishing markets

Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities

Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting

Fluency in a second language is welcome, but not required
