The Sr. Manager, Firmware Engineering will serve as an Engineering Manager of an elite team that is developing Cepheid’s next generation molecular diagnostics instrument platforms. Your team will be responsible for developing new Firmware and Embedded Software as well as supporting on-market product.
This position is part of the R&D Systems - Firmware Engineering and will be in Sunnyvale, California. At Cepheid, our vision is to be the leading provider of seamlessly connected diagnostic solutions.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
In collaboration with the Sr Director of Firmware Engineering, this incumbent will play a critical role in execution of the Cepheid’s diagnostics hardware development projects.
Day-to-Day management of Firmware/Embedded engineers working on multiple simultaneous sub-projects. Prioritize activities and balance schedules and resources to drive projects to successful on-time completion.
Lead cross-functional project teams comprising scientists, technical support and other engineers to resolve hardware/software/firmware issues.
Develop firmware, embedded software driver modules for hardware components. Document software/firmware; write technical specifications for interfaces and testing.
Drive design improvements that address the impact of the determined root cause and collaborate with other team members in the verification, validation and documentation of the design improvements.
Provide technical guidance to the team; and solve complex problems; and often mentor the junior members of the staff to solve unique problems.
Document software requirements and detailed design; write technical specifications for interfaces and testing.
The essential requirements of the job include:
BS or MS in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience to perform at this level. Bachelor’s degree with 9+ years or master’s degree with 7+ years of relevant work experience in engineering.
At least 5 years of people management experience.
Ability to fluidly shift focus, work well under pressure, handle multiple projects and prioritize based on changing business needs.
Capable of defining a clear vision, setting priorities for the team, and maintaining project commitments as the primary objective.
Skilled in effectively communicating complex technical issues and designs, both verbally and in writing, to peers.
Drive verification, validation and documentation as per design controls.
Experienced C, C++ programmer with experience in real-time system design, debug, and testing. Solid understanding of networking, concurrency, threading and data structures
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
Medical device or regulated industry experience very desirable
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
Basic knowledge of other engineering disciplines helpful (mechanical, electrical, Systems).

The salary range for this role is $190,000 – $210,000 This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
