**Job Summary**
The Health Research and Analytics (HRA) business line is currently seeking a full-time **Senior Health Physicist** to support our government customer at the Naval Dosimetry Center (NDC) in **Bethesda, MD** . This Public Health (PH) program enables our government customer to maximize readiness through force health protection (FHP) strategies and solutions for current and potential operational public health, preventive medicine, and chemical, biological, and radiological (CBRN) threats. The NDC is a critical facility located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. It serves as the Navy’s central hub for radiation exposure monitoring, dosimetry processing, and radiological consultation. The NDC ensures the radiation safety and readiness of Navy and Marine Corps personnel across various missions. Battelle shall enable these capabilities, products and services by providing Scientific and Technical Information (STI) deliverables, by performing Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E), and other Research and Development (R&D) related analytical services.
This position is responsible for providing onsite expert technical analysis, consultation, and developmental support for the implementation and advancement of the new NODS and NAVREMS platforms. The role includes delivering technical and scientific support for the existing dosimetry system, investigating and resolving technical issues to maintain ongoing operational integrity. Work will be conducted primarily in office and laboratory environments.
**Responsibilities**
+ Serve as a primary technical advisor for personnel dosimetry systems, applying principles of radiation physics, statistics, and data analysis to accomplish developmental assignments.
+ Design, develop, test, and evaluate radiation instrumentation, methodologies, and other devices utilized in the mission of the Navy Dosimetry Center (NDC) for both the current and future systems.
+ Evaluate and test commercially available (COTS) dosimetry instrument by analyzing their design, radiation properties and software to determine the scientific soundness of the principles used.
+ Investigate areas of weakness in the technical aspects of the Navy dosimetry program. Gather data to define problems, research alternative solutions, and devise new approaches for unique and difficult situations.
+ Assess proposed changes in instruments and methodologies and provide technical recommendations on their adequacy and compatibility with the Navy dosimetry program.
+ Perform acceptance testing on new instrumentation and systems to verify performance against requirements.
+ Prepare draft technical plans and preliminary specifications for the development of new or modified dosimetry systems required to meet Navy requirements.
+ Support government personnel in the technical review of contractor performance in support of current and anticipated requirements. This includes reviewing progress reports, visiting contractor facilities, and preparing reports with recommendations.
+ Prepare draft technical specifications for major items purchased and evaluate the degree to which vendor proposals meet these requirements, providing justified recommendations for acceptance or rejection to government leadership.
+ Provide expert technical support for the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Quality System Manual (QSM), Technical Basis Document (TBD), and associated procedures required for NVLAP accreditation.
+ Contribute to the authoring and technical review of all NVLAP management system documentation for both the current system and the new NODS program.
+ Support all NVLAP proficiency testing by providing technical analysis, data review, and interpretation of results.
+ As a technical expert, provide guidance and support during NVLAP onsite assessments.
+ Assist government personnel in the preparation and submission of the annual NVLAP application as required.
+ Provide technical guidance and assistance to other professional and technical personnel on team-type projects, including recommending methods of accomplishment, contributing to work plans, and providing technical advice on design and development efforts.
+ This position requires frequent movement and handling of heavy equipment and shielding materials used in experimental procedures. The role may involve occasional climbing, as well as extended periods of standing and walking while conducting experiments.
**Key Qualifications**
+ Master’s degree in natural science, health physics, or nuclear engineering.
+ Demonstrated expertise in radiation dosimetry, including extensive knowledge of the interaction of ionizing radiation with matter, gamma spectroscopy, radiation protection, and electronic theory.
+ Must be able to meet and maintain all medical and training requirements to qualify as a radiation worker at the Naval Dosimetry Center.
+ Broad knowledge of health physics techniques, instrumentation, and data base management.
+ Proven capacity for sound independent work in analyzing and proposing solutions for complex technical issues where precedents are not directly applicable.
+ Knowledge of guidelines and regulations published by DoD, EPA, NRC, and other relevant government agencies.
+ Experience in providing technical guidance on projects and supporting liaison activities with external scientific and regulatory bodies.
+ Possess strong technical project support skills for task execution and evaluation.
+ Ability to communicate effectively orally and written, especially to engage in formal and informal discussion of technical matters.
+ Ability to develop, draft and revise policies, standards, and technical documents for government review.
+ Ability to review scientific technical documents which impact existing policies and recommend appropriate follow up actions.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (CHP)
+ Professional experience with US Navy preventive medicine, environmental health, and/or safety programs.
