Position Summary
This Engineer role will support all functions inside the Distributed Energy Operations and Maintenance (DEOM) team and will report directly to the Manager Renewables Engineering. The Distributed Energy Operations and Maintenance team currently has multiple energy storage, solar, and microgrid facilities in various stages of the project lifecycle. The Engineer role will be expected to solve complex problems, manage work, and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work.
This primary focus for this role will require the ability to support troubleshooting and issue resolution for all types of equipment within a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), Solar, or Microgrid facility. Such a wide range of activities dictates the successful candidate will have been directly associated with previous electric utility projects or similar industry projects. Interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work both independently and within a team is required as this role will have continuous interaction with clients, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and internal/external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
+ Execute the testing and commissioning of site protective functions including relaying, control and instrumentation equipment. Review documentation and support activities related to Medium Voltage equipment testing and commissioning.
+ Provide operational and maintenance support by analyzing event files and providing data trends to communicate the root cause of equipment or operational failures. Provide engineering support between DEOM and the Distributed Generation Operations Center (DGOC) in all Duke Energy jurisdictions for DER and Microgrid facilities.
+ Maintain and review as-built documentation to validate conformance with Duke Energy and Industry standards and requirements as site improvements are completed.
+ Support Preventative and Corrective maintenance activities or participate in RCA’s as requested.
+ Become proficient with the Greensmith Energy Management System (GEMS) software and troubleshooting tools and be willing to teach/train other potential users.
+ Work with internal engineering teams to identify opportunities to improve contractual documentation, standards development, and the operation of energy storage, solar, and microgrid facilities.
+ Create and modify specifications and requirements related to the operation and maintenance of DER equipment.
+ Support project engineers with in-depth technical design reviews for energy storage, solar, and microgrid design packages. This would include reviewing protection settings for grid connected DERs and stand-alone microgrids utilizing inverter-based resources.
+ Assist with on-site review and quality assurance checks of installation and construction of equipment within DER facilities to ensure compliance with Duke Energy and Industry Standards. Document areas that require modifications due to non-conformance and provide recommendations to obtain adherence.
+ Coaches and mentors, other engineering and non-degreed engineering professionals.
Required/Basic Qualifications
+ Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
+ Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience (without a Professional Engineer certification) or 5 years of engineering experience (with a Professional Engineer certification).
Additional Preferred Qualifications
+ Knowledge of wiring diagrams and schematics. Diagrams and schematics associated with DER site equipment are a plus. (relays, inverters, UPS systems, etc.)
+ Familiarity with testing and commissioning of protective circuits using Omicron and Doble test sets
+ Analyses and reporting of fault responses and breaker operations
+ Experience with hands-on troubleshooting and evaluation of equipment failures to determine root-cause and necessary resolution actions
+ Familiarity with microprocessor-based relaying
+ Familiarity with relay protection schemes and relay logic
+ Experience with relay settings calculations for protective relays associated with Inverter Based Resources
+ Interpret and develop relay logic with microprocessor-based relays
+ Experience in the Electric Utility Industry
