Senior Energy Strategy Manager - Projects, AMER Central Infra-Energy
Description Amazon is seeking a results-oriented Senior Energy Strategy Manager to work as a Project Single Threaded Owner (STO) for the AMER Central Infra-Energy Team. In this role, you will help to deliver on AWS’ energy strategy by evaluating and structuring complex power procurement opportunities. This specialized role will be the single threaded owner working with cross-functional teams to assess power capacity deals, conduct financial analysis, and develop innovative transaction structures that accelerate AWS's path to multiple gigawatts of new capacity in 2026 and beyond. The Project STO will serve as a key contributor in evaluating non-standard utility capacity opportunities across the AMER Central Region, bringing deep analytical rigor and energy market expertise to complex deal assessments. This role requires a unique combination of technical energy knowledge, financial acumen, and project management skills to navigate the increasingly complex landscape of power procurement, including behind-the-meter installations, hybrid generation solutions, and mostly renewables generation power. Key job responsibilities Deal Evaluation & Analysis - Conduct comprehensive financial and technical assessments of power procurement opportunities in excess of 1GW of capacity - Analyze complex deal structures including capital contributions (CIAC), prepaid OpEx arrangements, and market settlement mechanisms - Develop detailed financial models to compare competing opportunities across cost, timeline, and risk dimensions Transaction Structuring & Coordination - Develop innovative deal structures that balance near-term capacity needs with long-term cost optimization - Coordinate with Legal, Finance, Tax, and Technical Accounting teams to ensure comprehensive due diligence - Create standardized evaluation frameworks and documentation templates for consistent deal assessment Cross-Functional Partnership - Work closely with TSS (Technical Site Services), RE (Real Estate), and TIPM teams to validate technical feasibility - Collaborate with Legal on contract negotiations and risk mitigation strategies - Engage with Water and Renewable Energy teams on integrated infrastructure solutions - Lead monthly leadership reviews and portfolio prioritization discussions Market Intelligence & Innovation - Stay current on emerging power generation technologies including SMRs, hybrid (BTM &FTM) solutions, and energy storage - Analyze utility rate-making practices and regulatory environments across jurisdictions - Assess innovative approaches to accelerate capacity delivery timelines A day in the life This Senior Energy Strategy Manager will spend their day conducting deep-dive financial analysis on potential delivery opportunities, evaluating emerging power generation technologies and identify ideal capacity delivery options to power AWS’ growth. They'll coordinate with internal stakeholders to validate generation capacity assumptions, and work with Finance to assess NPV impacts of various capital contribution scenarios. They'll participate in portfolio reviews to compare opportunities across regions, prepare executive documentation outlining risks, opportunities and make recommendations to support accelerated growth. Throughout the day, they'll leverage their energy market expertise to identify hidden costs and optimize deal terms while maintaining clear communication across stakeholder groups. Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business, economics, engineering , analytics, mathematics, statistics or a related technical or quantitative field - Experience in tax, finance or a related analytical field, or experience in solving complex business challenges by delivering accurate and timely financial models, analysis, and recommendations that have a proven impact on business (e.g., financial savings, operational improvements, or customer benefits) - Experience managing multiple projects and priorities across teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment - • 12+ years of experience in utility/energy industry in commercial, business development, financial analysis, or infrastructure delivery roles - • 8+ years of experience analyzing energy projects and evaluating complex financial structures - • 5+ years of experience with HV/MV electric infrastructure projects in planning, evaluation, or project management capacity - • Experience working with regulated electric utilities on tariff structures, rate-making, and capital contribution arrangements Preferred Qualifications - Experience relating complex tax risks to non-tax business stakeholders - • Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA), Finance, or Engineering - • Experience with derivative accounting treatment for power purchase agreements and energy service agreements - • Knowledge of utility accounting practices, including CIAC revenue treatment and ROE calculations - • Experience evaluating emerging power generation technologies (SMRs, hybrid solutions, energy storage) - • Familiarity with wholesale power markets and market settlement mechanisms - • Experience working with public utility commissions and energy regulators - • Experience with IT infrastructure, data centers, or cloud services - • Professional certifications such as CFA, CPA, or PE (Electrical Engineering) - • Demonstrated ability to create standardized frameworks and evaluation methodologies - • Strong bias for action with proven track record of delivering results in ambiguous, fast-paced environments Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
