Senior Director Hospital Coding

Job Description:

The Senior Director of HIM (Health Information Management) holds a pivotal role in driving strategic, operational, and financial success across the integrated health system, including vendor-supported services. The leader ensures coding practices are accurate, compliant with regulations, and standardized across all facilities, directly impacting the system's financial health, integrity, quality reputation and reducing regulatory risk. This leader is an experienced leader, expert consultant, and collaborative liaison across departments. This role requires strategic leadership, exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to drive continuous improvement in HIM Coding performance. This position partners with other senior leaders across the organization and external vendors to ensure alignment with organizational and strategic goals.

This position will allow you to work in a fully remote / work from home capacity, with required periodic travel to Broomfield, Colorado.

As the Senior Director of Hospital Coding, you will:

Cultivate exceptional relationships and communication with diverse stakeholders including across revenue cycle, executive leaders, clinical teams, medical staff and DTS.

This position requires a deep knowledge of industry’s best practices and expertise with process improvement to enhance coding quality, compliance and efficiency. 

Lead a large team of coding professionals, provide mentorship and guidance, and foster a culture of collaboration and excellence.

Identify and implement new technology or identify enhancements to existing technology to drive performance improvement, efficiency and/or to improve the patient/provider/caregiver experience.

Identify, lead and drive quality and performance improvement initiatives. Lead the team to establish mechanisms to design, measure, maintain, and improve the performance and quality of department’s services. 

Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory guidelines and established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. 

Develop action plans in line with the organization's strategic initiatives and goals.

Utilize advanced analytical skills to interpret coded data and financial management metrics, presenting complex information in an understandable manner for informed decision-making.

Exemplify a servant leadership approach, effectively communicating and resolving conflicts sometimes in high emotion situations while maintaining a high level of collaboration and service.

Collaborate with other senior leaders to develop and implement goals and objectives.

Create and manage the annual operating budget. Conduct return on investment analyses on capital expenditures and identifies various opportunities for savings and revenue growth. Analyze budget variances while implementing improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in health information management or healthcare administration, or related field from an accredited institution is required.  Education is verified.

Demonstrated experience in progressive leadership roles in a large healthcare organization with competency in developing creative, efficient and effective solutions to complex business challenges.

Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of hospital coding and the impacts of coded data including reimbursement and quality.

Demonstrates extensive knowledge of the current healthcare environment and trends, technologies, data management systems, policies, and regulations related to Coding and HIM with an ability to effectively influence change and manage the change process. 

Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, organizational, presentation, verbal and written communication skills.

Demonstrates advanced knowledge of information systems, vendor contracting, patient accounting processes, including billing, collections, and reimbursement analysis.

Demonstrated ability to connect with leaders across many levels of the organization.

Demonstrated success leading a team of highly engaged and high performing Coding professionals

Demonstrated proficiency utilizing Microsoft office tools.

Preferred

Master’s degree in healthcare administration or related field from an accredited institution.  Education is verified.

Ten (10) years of progressive HIM leadership experience.

AHIMA Certification (RHIA or CCS).

Epic experience.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience. 

$77.50 - $119.68
