What you'll be doing

The Senior Director, International Tax -  Planning & Strategy, is a key leadership role within CIBC’s Finance function. Reporting to the VP, International Taxation and Transfer Pricing, this role will lead the international tax strategy for global CIBC’s global operations. This role will provide expert guidance on cross-border tax matters and support business and treasury initiatives with strategic tax planning. This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership, and the ability to collaborate across functions and geographies. This role involves planning, management and implementation, working closely with both external advisors and internal stakeholders to ensure effective execution of cross-border initiatives while ensuring compliance with evolving Canadian international tax requirements.

How you'll succeed

International Tax Strategy- Develop and implement CIBC’s international tax strategy in alignment with business objectives and cross-border tax requirements. Lead planning and guidance to senior management on the cross-border tax implications of international business activities, mergers and acquisitions, new market entries and internal reorganizations. Identify and manage international tax risks, proactively addressing potential exposures.

Stakeholder Management- Partner with internal stakeholders and external advisors to support cross-border business and treasury initiatives, including project management and implementation. Support CIBC’s foreign offices by providing expert guidance on a wide range of cross-border tax matters including, including withholding tax and foreign tax credit analysis. Collaborate with the tax compliance group to ensure accurate reflection and reporting of key international transactions in quarterly tax provisions and tax returns (e.g., T1134, T106). Monitor and communicate legislative and administrative changes in global and Canadian international tax rules to impacted stakeholders.

Leadership- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, external advisors, and tax authorities. Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of tax professionals. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and professional growth.

Who you are

You can demonstrate experience. 10 or more years of Canadian international tax work experience with a specialization in outbound taxation. Exposure to the financial services industry is as an asset however, consideration will be given to candidates who have a strong interest and desire to learn the financial services business.Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation (preferably CPA, CA) or Master’s degree in Taxation, tax law, or related field.

You are designated. Completed Levels I and II of the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax. Completion of the In-depth International Tax course is preferred.

You are detail oriented.  Excellent research and analysis.  Advanced problem-solving skills and ability to implement the solutions. Results-oriented, self-motivated, proactive and proven ability to work independently. Focused, thorough and disciplined in approach. Decisive, confident and comfortable working closely with and collaborating with business partners.

You have strong communication skills. Excellent communication and presentation skills.  Proficient with Microsoft Office products plus able to quickly learn new relevant add-on applications if required, e.g., Alteryx.
