Senior Director, Communications
Serving as an integral member of the Division Leadership Team, the Senior Director, Communications leads a multi-function and multi-discipline, global team that is responsible for the development, integration and implementation of a broad range of communication strategies, internal and external, relative to both company and division strategy to effectively meet financial objectives. This role serves in both a strategic and operational manner with global business perspective, thinking strategically, both globally and locally, guiding investment decisions, leading change management and advising leaders with an in depth understanding of channel utilization and Stryker’s complex, organizational matrix. The Senior Director, Communications provides leadership and direction to Medical’s Marketing Communications, Strategic Communications, Digital Marketing, and Customer and Employee Events teams (functionally identified as Communications) to ensure achievement of business goals and objectives. This position is responsible for the ongoing development and mentorship of the leadership team. + Lead collaboration with senior leaders globally to define business strategy and priorities and translate into communications strategy for employees. Identify opportunities to create cross-group collaboration and synergies. Demonstrate discretion and professionalism when working with Leadership Team on sensitive business and organizational issues. + Lead executive communications strategy across the globe, serving as a consultant to Medical’s Division Leadership team, supporting the vision and objectives of the commercial business strategy. + Lead Communications team through planning and implementation of a strategic, integrated marketing approach across all Division initiatives, programs and activities. Develop effective strategies for public relations, marketing communications campaigns, brand awareness, and a robust customer journey across all platforms. Use quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate the success and effectiveness of communications initiatives and campaigns with target audiences on an ongoing basis. Adjust strategies and tactics as necessary to meet long-term objectives, annual goals and KPIs. + Lead crisis management planning and establish/update crisis communications policies and procedures. Identify situations affecting the health, safety or reputation of Stryker and the Medical Division in collaboration with Group and Corporate Communications that need an immediate media and/or public response. Provide thoughtful, real-time crisis management, guidance and support to Division Leadership Team. + Create and lead the Medical Division’s Communications center of excellence that creates sustainable and scalable platforms, system and process that enable leaders and marketing teams to deliver their messages to our employees and customers in an effective and efficient manner. Ensure effective structure, processes and protocols are in place for optimal workflow management and success. Seek feedback from commercial business stakeholders regularly and adjust approach and processes, as appropriate. + Lead extensive cross-group, cross-division and cross-boundary collaboration at all levels with excellent written and verbal communication, a wide range of analytical capabilities, and the ability to build compelling internal presentations, customer-facing content and comprehensive business review materials. + Support senior leaders and global functions through company transformation and change initiatives. + Develop and maintain strong leadership relationships and regular touch points to stay connected and aligned to global commercial business and functional needs. Connect leaders together for broader discussion and decision-making as needed. + Develop and support leadership speaking engagements, including meeting presentations, multi-media, scripts, key messages, talk tracks and executive presentations. + Drive the effective execution of the brand strategy and align Medical’s strategies to company-wide initiatives. + Proactively engage senior leaders to surface organizational challenges and emerging issues, providing enterprise-level perspective, and shaping strategic communication and solutions that align with broader organizational goals. + Lead strategy to create consistent touchpoints for Division Leadership team across Medical’s ten global locations on an annual basis. + Manage outside strategic communications consultants. + Accountable for team performance and results, overseeing the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning and talent development opportunities. + Regularly communicates Communication’s vision, goals, and achievements to all employees as well as to senior staff. Communication may include, but is not limited to: annual meetings, quarterly town halls, weekly staff meetings, etc. + Attracts, develops, engages, and aligns talent in the Communications organization, including importing and exporting talent throughout Stryker + Drives employee development and engagement through communication, support, trainings, and responsive management + Supports the growth and development of the team by fostering personal growth, being responsible and accountable, exuding passion towards the success of the business, and treating all with dignity and respect + Participates in sales meetings, tradeshows, marketing meetings, product launches and other events as requested Qualifications + Bachelors degree required, with a focus in English, communications, marketing or related field preferred + 10+ years of proven leadership experience in communications, marketing, branding or related area required + Ability to build strong relationships with senior leaders and influence strategy and direction + Ability to communicate with and understand business needs and articulate those needs in a strategy and plan + Ability to lead communications strategy around major change initiatives + Cross-functional project management and collaboration skills across multiple teams and levels and boundaries. + Problem solver with creative approach to proactive identification and resolution of issues + Strong quantitative and analytical skills and ability to analyze and measure success + Execution-oriented, self-starter and self-navigator who can prioritize high-value projects versus tasks in a fast-paced environment and balance demands of multiple projects + Very responsive, with a customer-centric / solutions-oriented approach and the ability to serve a wide range of needs within the organization and at all levels + Experience working in a decentralized environment + Outstanding written and verbal communication skills including the ability to tailor communications style to audience + Exceptional organizational and project management skills + Strong attention to detail a must Physical and Mental Requirements + Must have ability to exercise sound judgment to prioritize projects based on impact to the division and the entire company is essential + Highly-capable at managing ambiguity and negotiating workable solutions to challenging problems. + Must be able to understand Stryker’s business needs and ensure that all internal/external communications support and build the company’s strategies, key messages and brand + Must be able to lead cross-divisional teams of people to work toward common goals without having direct control over them + Must have ability to work as an individual contributor as well as lead teams + Must be able to work collaboratively with Stryker’s divisions, internal teams and external consultants as needed to create strategies and plans of action and ensure that they are implemented + Must have ability to complete all projects on time, on scope and on budget and meet all business requirements + Must have ability to move quickly without compromising quality Health benefits include: Medical and prescription drug insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, critical illness insurance, accident insurance, hospital indemnity insurance, personalized healthcare support, wellbeing program and tobacco cessation program.
