This role is hybrid and requires you to be at our / client office at a minimum of 5 days a month- subject to change at any time.
CGI is seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer Lead to join our Banking Services practice in Downtown Toronto. In this role, you will translate complex banking business concepts into conceptual, logical, and physical data models.
You will work with banking stakeholders, architects, engineers, and governance teams to support transformation across data warehouses, lakehouses, and cloud analytics platforms.
1. Lead the translation of business requirements into scalable, enterprise-grade data engineering solutions across the Azure data platform.
2. Own the design and architecture of end-to-end data pipelines, including ingestion, transformation, storage, and consumption layers using ADLS, Databricks, and Azure Data Factory (ADF).
3. Provide technical leadership and guidance to data engineers, ensuring best practices in coding, performance optimization, and reliability.
4. Define and maintain engineering standards and artifacts, including:
Pipeline and workflow architectures
Data flow designs (landing → raw → curated → consumption)
Job orchestration, scheduling, and dependency management
Interface specifications for APIs, events, and file-based integrations
5. Lead the development of high-performance Databricks pipelines using PySpark and Spark SQL, following Delta Lake and Azure best practices.
6. Collaborate closely with data modelers and architects to ensure alignment with logical and physical data models, including naming, partitioning, and performance standards.
7. Drive data governance, quality, and compliance initiatives; participate in model reviews, impact assessments, and design approvals.
8. Translate data models into engineering-ready specifications, including source-to-target (S2T) mappings, schema definitions, and business rules.
9. Partner with cross-functional teams (engineering, architecture, analytics, and business stakeholders) to deliver reliable and scalable data solutions.
10. Review code, mentor team members, and support production deployments and issue resolution.
1. 7–12+ years of experience as a Data Engineer, including hands-on experience in a Lead role.
2. Strong banking domain experience, including accounts, loans, credit, and payments.
3. Proficiency with ER modeling tools such as Erwin, ER/Studio, Sparx EA, and SQLDBM.
4. Strong knowledge of data warehouse design, including star and snowflake schemas, data mesh architecture, and Data Pattern 5.0.
5. Hands-on experience with PySpark for distributed data processing and transformations.
6. Proven experience with Azure data technologies, including Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory (ADF), Apache Spark, Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS), and Azure Synapse Analytics.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Databricks Unity Catalog.
- Experience with IFRS 9, Basel, payments, or compliance reporting.
- Knowledge of Data Vault 2.0, canonical, or event-driven modeling.
- Agile experience.
- Degree in CS, Engineering, or related field.

The determination of this range includes factors such as skill set level, geographic market, experience and training, and licenses and certifications. Compensation decisions depend on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $95,000–$145,000. This role is an existing vacancy.**
