Job Description
Role Purpose
This role provides strategic legal leadership for AbbVie’s global artificial intelligence (AI) regulatory, policy, and contracting framework. The position exists to ensure AbbVie can safely and compliantly scale AI across jurisdictions by anticipating regulatory developments, establishing enterprise policy, and enabling cross-border deployment of AI technologies.

Global (OUS) scope across all business functions and geographiesLeads global AI Governance, regulatory, and policy development strategiesServes as primary legal authority on AI regulatory and policy matters for Global markets (OUS)Advises senior Legal, Compliance, and business leadershipIndividual contributor with significant cross-functional and executive influenceCore Duties & Responsibilities
Monitor, assess, and interpret global AI regulations (e.g., EU AI Act, and other international regimes, e.g., China, Japan, Australia, and Brazil) and advise on business impactLead development and maintenance of enterprise AI legal policies, standards, and governance frameworksPartners with Privacy legal team to guide cross-border AI deployment, including data transfer, localization, and compliance obligationsDevelop and maintain AI contracting standards, including model clause for:Data usage and training rightsLiability and indemnificationTransparency and regulatory complianceDraft, review, and negotiate complex AI-related agreements (vendor, data, and strategic partnerships)Partner with Government Affairs, Compliance, Privacy, and Ethics teams to align on enterprise AI policy positionsSupport executive leadership and Board/Audit Committee briefings on AI regulatory developments and risksAdvise on high-risk or novel AI use cases and strategic initiativesProactively identify emerging legal and regulatory risks and define mitigation strategies
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent and active bar membershipMinimum 5+ years legal experienceDeep expertise in technology law, global regulatory frameworks, and data privacyDemonstrated experience advising on cross-border regulatory issuesSignificant experience negotiating complex technology and AI-related agreementsStrong executive communication and advisory skillsPreferred Qualifications
10 years of legal experience preferredExperience with AI/ML regulatory frameworks (e.g., EU AI Act, GDPR)Experience in life sciences or other highly regulated industriesBackground collaborating with government affairs or regulatory bodiesSkills & Competencies
Strategic thinking and regulatory foresightAbility to translate complex legal issues into actionable business guidanceStrong stakeholder influence and executive presenceExcellent judgment and risk management capabilityExceptional written and verbal communication skillsAdditional Information

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
