CDM Smith is seeking a Senior Automation and Controls Engineer to join a great team of motivated Automation engineers in the Southeast! The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about building client relationships, mentoring junior level staff and delivering quality technical products on time and on budget. CDM Smith has been a leader in providing Automation design and programming services for over 30 years.
The selected candidate will be an integral part of our team in the Orlando (Maitland) office and will assist with growing our business in collaboration with our Automation Practice Leader and our Client Service Leaders located in various offices in the Southeast. Join us!
As a key member of the Automation team, you will contribute to CDM Smith’s mission by:
• Developing instrumentation, controls, and related system designs—from basic to highly complex—based on high-level goals. Creating Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and providing guidance to junior staff using 3D and 4D drafting tools.
• Preparing technical memoranda addressing design issues for clients and drafting preliminary design reports (PDRs) with limited supervision.
• Collaborating with clients to define user requirements and documenting technical specifications for programming teams.
• Reviewing component-level shop drawings, responding to RFIs under supervision, and performing witnessed factory testing (WFT), field acceptance testing (FAT), and field inspections.
• Designing systems incorporating HMI software, SCADA hardware (servers, workstations), network equipment (firewalls, routers, switches), PLCs, reporting tools, and historical data collection systems. Preparing level-of-effort (LOE) estimates.
• Developing network designs using control system architecture diagrams to specify CAT6 and fiber optic Ethernet connections for HMI/SCADA equipment, PLCs, power monitors, VFDs, and networked field instruments.
• Leading testing and startup activities for instrumentation and control systems, ensuring documentation completion and quality assurance with minimal supervision.
• Creating Operations & Maintenance manuals for complex systems and developing end-user training programs, including training plans for all organizational levels.
• Mentoring and directing junior staff, reviewing their work, and providing feedback on client relationships and career development.
• Leading proposal development and client presentations, identifying opportunities to expand existing contracts.
• Performing additional duties as required.
