Job Description
The Senior Accountant will oversee core accounting operations within a construction‑focused environment. This individual will manage and lead all departmental functions, including billing, financial statement preparation, general ledger maintenance, cost accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, and tax compliance. This role plays a critical part in strengthening internal controls, supporting financial planning, and driving process improvements across the accounting function. This position also offers a strong long‑term growth path, with the potential to develop into a Vice President–level leadership role for a high‑performing professional.
ResponsibilitiesOversee and manage general accounting functions including A/P, A/R, GL, and tax-related activitiesProcess daily customer invoicing and accounts payable invoicesHire, train, develop, and retain accounting staffCoach, counsel, evaluate, and monitor staff performance to ensure strong job resultsReview and strengthen internal control systems and accounting processesContribute financial insights to support strategic planning and operational decisionsImplement productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolve issues and support continuous improvementCollect, interpret, and present financial data to managementAssess accounting operations and recommend/implement improvementsPrepare accurate and timely month-end financial statementsMaintain documented accounting policies and operational best practicesOversee daily collections activity and maintain aging summaries and lien reportingSupervise and support preparation and filing of monthly and quarterly sales tax returnsAssist with annual property tax assessmentsCollaborate with Project Managers to close out monthly cost reportsPrepare documentation, schedules, and reports for year-end auditEnsure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirementsOversee petty cash management and monthly reconciliationProvide backup support to Staff Accountant as neededPerform additional related duties to support accounting and company goalsEssential Skills & QualificationsStrong accounting knowledge across A/P, A/R, GL, taxes, and cost accountingAbility to manage a three-person accounting department5+ years of progressive accounting experienceBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business AdministrationConstruction industry or manufacturing experience highly preferredSolid understanding of GAAP and accounting best practicesStrong analytical skills and ability to implement process improvementsAbility to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced environmentExcellent written and verbal communication skillsProficiency with Microsoft Office SuiteAdditional Skills Prior experience as an Accounting Supervisor or ManagerExperience with accounting software and construction financial systemsWork EnvironmentFully onsite in Wallingford, CTStandard workweek: Monday–FridayOffice-based role within a construction company settingJob Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wallingford, CT.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $38.46 - $46.00/hr.
