The Senior Accountant is responsible for accurately analyzing, recording, and summarizing medical and non-medical financial transactions from multiple internal sources. This role supports timely and accurate financial reporting used for internal decision-making and external requirements, while ensuring compliance with internal controls, policies, and applicable accounting standards. The position partners closely with Finance and Accounting teams to meet month-end, reporting, and audit deadlines.
ResponsibilitiesPrepare journal entries for medical, pharmacy, revenue, and non-medical expenses.Record premium revenue, risk adjustments, corridors, and related payment entries.Prepare monthly accruals for medical, non-medical, and administrative expenses incurred but not yet invoiced.Record subsidiary transactions and investments.Partner with Accounting Operations to ensure accuracy of Accounts Receivable.Partner with Finance to prepare monthly financial schedules and related journal entries.Maintain and analyze spreadsheets included in the month-end close package.Reconcile and analyze financial data to support management review.Prepare monthly expense reports by cost center, including budget vs. actual variance analysis.Support account reconciliation variance explanations.Review classification of fixed assets and approve adjusting entries for disposals.Review prepaid expense classifications and monthly amortization entries.Review reconciliations for fixed assets and prepaids.Review accounts payable coding for accuracy prior to system entry.Support GAAP and statutory audits, compliance monitoring, and internal controls.Assist with statutory and tax reporting documentation.Prepare check requests and support miscellaneous accounting and departmental needs as required.Essential SkillsAdvanced General Ledger & Journal Entry AccountingStrong GAAP Knowledge with Financial Analysis & Reporting ExperienceAdvanced Excel & Accounting Systems ProficiencyStrong analytical skills with a high level of attention to detailAbility to prioritize work and meet tight deadlinesStrong communication and collaboration skillsAdditional Skills & QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.3+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within healthcare, insurance, or a regulated environment.Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.Experience working with accounting and financial systems (ERP and claims-based systems preferred).Ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams.Experience providing guidance, training, or review support to junior staff preferred.Work EnvironmentThis position offers a hybrid schedule with 3 days in the office and 2 days remote. The office is located in Springfield, MA. The role is part of a strong Accounting Department within an organization that is continuously growing.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Springfield, MA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $31.15 - $42.36/hr.
