Security Operations Centre Manager

Are you a cybersecurity leader ready to shape the future of threat response in Alberta’s education sector? Do you want to help build a world-class Security Operations Centre (SOC) to defend against a fast-evolving threat landscape? This may be the opportunity you’ve been looking for!

Cybera is Alberta’s research and education network organization. We serve the research and education sectors by providing trusted global connectivity and valued digital services, and by fostering collaborations and local technological advancements. Our vision is to create a connected, secure and equitable digital future for Alberta.

We are seeking a skilled and driven cybersecurity professional to take on the role of Security Operations Centre Manager, responsible for leading a newly formed regional Security Operations Centre (rSOC).  This is your opportunity to lead and optimize a high-performing analyst team, driving real-time threat detection, effective incident coordination, and operational excellence. You’ll be a key figure in the evolution of our SOC, collaborating closely with internal partners, national security peers, and global research and education network organizations.

If you are passionate about cybersecurity and have been looking for an opportunity to see your leadership skills improve the public sector, as well as collaborate with peers nationally and globally, please introduce yourself!

We will ask you to:

Lead the daily operations of a high-performing SOC analyst team — optimizing workflows, coordination, and service excellence. Oversee incident detection, triage, and response in alignment with established procedures and Service Level Agreements. Collaborate closely with the detections team to enhance threat detection, response, and automation capabilities. Coordinate the SOC team scheduling, including shift rosters, on-call, annual leave, etc. Foster a culture of learning by mentoring analysts, supporting professional development, and promoting knowledge sharing. Build and sustain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, member institutions, and global follow-the-sun partners. Maintain awareness of current and emerging threats to shape incident response and detection strategies. Work in a hybrid home/office environment and be available on-call for critical incident support. Navigate a fast-paced environment with competing demands while maintaining a high standard of service.

Your professional toolkit should include:

5-10 years’ experience in security operations, incident response, threat hunting roles, and/or information security forensic roles. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent practical experience; further education or certifications in cybersecurity are a plus. Ability to work with clear leadership but minimal day-to-day supervision. Leadership and management experience with teams working in a hybrid home/office environment. Strong verbal and written English communication skills. Ability to understand complex cybersecurity topics, and communicate and present them at a higher level. Ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion and confidentiality. Hands-on experience in security tools and technologies, specifically SIEM, SOAR and UEBA tools.  Awareness of current trends in cybersecurity, including knowledge of tactics for different types of threat actors.  Knowledge of IT security frameworks, such as NIST CSF and CIS.

If this opportunity excites you, we encourage you to spend some time researching Cybera (https://cybera.ca) and Canada’s National Research and Education Network (NREN). Please introduce yourself to us and describe how your skills and experience would be a great fit for Cybera and our community by way of a written cover letter.
