**Discover Impactful Work:**
The Organic Chemistry manufacturing department is responsible for delivering premier fluorescent probes and reagents that enable our customers to advance scientific discovery with cellular labeling and detection tools. Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a highly motivated chemist with expertise in Organic Chemistry to join our manufacturing team in Eugene.
This is a hybrid role – merging chemistry, continuous improvement, technical writing, and supply chain skills. Work with the chemistry team and support functions to drive standardization of chemistry and business processes, handle SKU and document lifecycle, and complete quality and productivity improvement projects. The successful candidate will have experience in organic synthesis, be capable of performing bench chemistry, and have an interest in the opportunity to expand their scope of work to other areas within operations.
Apply your organic chemistry synthesis skills, scientific knowledge, and technical communication and writing skills to support our chemistry team in supplying over four thousand research and commercial products that enable our customers in the life sciences industry to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer.
**A day in the Life:**
+ Work with the highest attention to personal and co-worker safety and follow all department policies related to operation of process equipment, chemical handling, and waste disposal.
+ Perform multi-step organic synthesis (100 mg to 500 g scale) in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Apply technical ability to complete the processes and procedures.
+ Work independently to complete manufacturing work orders on schedule. Accurately adhere to policies and achieve high efficiency while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
+ Write clear protocols and work instructions for chemistry manufacturing processes and analytical equipment. Handle document creation and revision in an electronic document control system.
+ Use internal business systems (ERP and PLM) to create and revise raw material and sub-assembly SKUs to accurately reflect current manufacturing processes.
+ Participate in Continuous Improvement activities. Develop strategies with team members to document and report each event and ensure implementation of all corrective actions.
+ Collaborate with senior scientists and supervisor to continue developing mastery of higher-level chemistry skills and understanding of reaction mechanisms.
+ Cross train in other manufacturing departments (particles, quantum dot, and conjugation chemistry) to support manufacturing and continuous improvement activities.
+ Complete all assigned tasks daily, which may require overtime based on fluctuations in customer demand and business need.
**Keys to Success:**
**Education**
+ Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related field with 3+ years of applicable organic synthesis experience
+ Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry (preferred) with 1+ years of applicable organic synthesis experience
+ Direct experience in organic synthesis, advanced chromatography methods, and analytical methods to monitor and troubleshoot chemistry processes and determine product quality (HPLC, NMR, UV-Vis, TLC).
**Experience, Knowledge, Skills**
+ Possess an understanding of basic reaction mechanisms and reactivity.
+ Proven technical writing skills to document synthetic procedures accurately using proper scientific style, word usage, spelling, and grammar. Interpret and summarize scientific/technical results concisely.
+ Experience using Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Quality business systems and knowledge of data and processes required to operate these systems.
+ Excel experience using conditional formatting, nested logic statements, data tools, sort/filter, pivot tables, and lookup functions.
+ Adaptable, eager learner, able to think critically, proactively solve problems and maintain composure in stressful or ambiguous situations.
+ Effective people skills in a team-centered work environment and ability to communicate constructively with peers and leadership.
+ Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to evaluate, prioritize and complete multiple projects while responding to changing priorities and due dates.
**Physical Requirements / Work Environment**
+ The position requires full ambulatory skills and physical coordination sufficient to move about laboratory and office locations; able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch periodically for prolonged periods of time; and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights 20-50 pounds.
