Job Title: Sample Prep Technician

Job Description

The Sample Prep Technician plays a critical role in supporting the Chemistry Laboratory by preparing food and agricultural samples for analytical testing, including pesticide, nutrition, and contaminant analysis. This position ensures the integrity and traceability of samples throughout their lifecycle and contributes directly to the lab’s mission of delivering high-quality, timely testing services. This role supports all testing departments and is central to maintaining workflow efficiency and sample quality.

ResponsibilitiesReceive and log samples accurately.Determine appropriate preparation methods based on SOPs.Operate equipment such as grinders, choppers, and food processors to homogenize samples.Document all sample details and manage storage and disposal.Enter data into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) with precision.Maintain a clean and organized workspace.Sanitize equipment between uses to prevent cross-contamination.Adhere to chemical safety protocols.Communicate with the sample receiving team and chemists to clarify client preferences and prioritize tasks.Troubleshoot issues in the prep process.Calibrate and maintain lab equipment, logging maintenance activities.Identify when external repairs are needed.Help train others in sample preparation techniques.Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.Essential SkillsHigh School Diploma or GED.Experience in fast-paced environments (e.g., food service, lab prep, manufacturing, assembly, production).Ability to follow SOPs accurately.Data entry proficiency (Excel, LIMS).Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.Comfortable with noise and dust.Strong attention to detail.Clear written and verbal communication skills.Professionalism under pressure.Reliability and punctuality.Team-oriented and collaborative mindset.Organized and efficient multitasking ability.Adaptability.Basic computer literacy.Additional Skills & QualificationsQuick learner.Exposure to high-volume processing.Experience with Microsoft Office.Work Environment

The position is located onsite in a clean, organized, and fast-paced laboratory environment with a strong emphasis on hygiene and safety. The schedule is Monday through Thursday with early start times (6:30–7:30 AM) and a shorter Friday, depending on workload. The work involves standing for long periods, repetitive hand movements, and lifting up to 30 lbs. The lab can be noisy, requiring hearing protection or dust masks in some areas. PPE such as gloves and lab coats are mandatory. The team consists of two sample prep assistants, and this role will train under the current assistant. The work style is a mix of independent tasks and team collaboration, with a management style that values direct communication and accountability.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $36400.00 - $37960.00/yr.
