Job Title: Sales Tax Accountant
Job Description

The Sales Tax Accountant is responsible for managing accounting activities related to sales and other indirect taxes and leading sales tax audits for a large portfolio of hotel properties. This role focuses on state and local tax audits, audit support, tax research, and compliance while partnering closely with hotel property teams, corporate accounting, and operations personnel.

ResponsibilitiesSupport and manage state and local tax audits, including sales, use, occupancy, and excise taxes for a portfolio of hotel properties.Track all audit activity and maintain a detailed, up-to-date audit log that includes new audits, in‑process audits, and resolutions.Gather, organize, and submit audit support documentation in a traceable, defensible, and well-documented manner.Interface directly with state and local tax authorities to address audit questions, provide documentation, and support audit positions.Collaborate with hotel property teams to obtain necessary records, clarify transactions, and ensure timely audit responses.Work closely with corporate accounting and operations personnel to coordinate audit-related information and ensure alignment with financial records.Perform tax research to support audit positions, interpret sales and use tax rules and regulations, and resolve tax inquiries.Assist with audit calculations and reconciliations to optimize audit outcomes and minimize exposure.Prepare and distribute reports, schedules, and data required for audits and internal stakeholders.Ensure compliance with internal controls, documentation standards, and record retention policies related to tax and audit activities.Cross-train within the tax team to provide backup support and ensure continuity of tax processes.Support continuous improvement initiatives by documenting processes and contributing to best practices within the tax function.Work extended or flexible hours during active audit periods to meet deadlines and respond to time-sensitive requests.Essential SkillsAt least 5 years of experience as an accountant focused on sales tax.Strong, hands-on experience with state and local tax audits.Proficiency in sales and use tax rules and regulations.Strong analytical skills with heavy use of Excel for data analysis, reconciliations, and reporting.Ability to process and handle large volumes of information and data accurately and efficiently.Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in documentation and calculations.Basic understanding of accounting concepts and an accounting background.Strong communication skills to interact effectively with tax authorities, hotel property teams, and corporate personnel.Additional Skills & QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field is preferred.Previous experience working in a comptroller’s office is preferred.Experience with multi-jurisdictional tax issues and working across various state and local tax jurisdictions.Experience performing tax research and applying findings to audit positions and compliance.Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple audits simultaneously.Demonstrated commitment to process improvement and documentation of best practices.Work Environment

This position is based at a corporate headquarters located in a brand-new building with modern amenities and facilities designed to support staff comfort and productivity. The role sits within a fast-paced tax team of seven professionals and supports a large hospitality organization that operates and manages more than 700 hotels across the United States and internationally. The work involves frequent collaboration with hotel property teams and corporate departments, and may require extended or flexible hours during periods of active audits.

This is a Contract position based out of Plano, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
