Safety Superintendent - Surface

 

JOB POSTING :    SAFETY SUPERINTENDENT - SURFACE                                                                                      DEPARTMENT      :    SAFETY & HEALTH STRATUM OF ROLE :    II H EMPLOYMENT STATUS     :    PERMANENT CLOSING DATE :    21ST  JULY 2025

 

ROLE PURPOSE

 

The purpose of this role is to oversee a Safety Management System that will promote a healthy and safe working environment for employees (including contractors) and visitors and for ensuring compliance to all relevant standards and legislation. This role will work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders to establish and maintain a safety culture based on effective training, injury prevention and continuous improvement. The role holder will act as a Risk coordinator for the various departments on site and provide technical input and support in relation to all Safety Systems and procedures moving from Construction into Operations. The role holder will lead his/her team to deliver measurable outcomes as part of a continuous improvement process, to bridge any identified gaps, facilitate change and embed new systems and technological tools.

 

 

.KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

Identify, develop and facilitate the implementation of necessary Operational Readiness Works from Surface Safety perspective to support the redevelopment of the Obuasi Mine. Develop and communicate a rolling (4-3-2-1) quarterly plan for the budgeted year identifying Surface Safety priorities, milestones, and events. Develop and submit the annual cost centre budget to achieve the required targets for approved Programs. Deliver the work of the Surface Safety department within approved budget targets and specified timeframes, costs and related KPIs. Supervise and support safety officers and surface personnel in implementing safety programs and training. Demonstrate Safety Leadership and improve the Culture across the Safety department regarding Safety, Health, and Sustainable Development Develop the Surface Safety team to capably and consistently deliver the annual and quarterly plan according to their role and level of authority. Rigorously drive implementation of projects and strategies and nurture and sustain a culture of Accountability and Continuous Improvement within the Safety department. Develop and maintain constructive relationships with Internal Stakeholders (Corporate, Group Planning & Technical, sister mines, CARO, etc.) and external Stakeholders (Regulatory Agencies and Authorities, Minerals Commission) to establish existing and changing societal and regulatory expectations and requirements. Ensure compliance to all site safety policies, procedures, and relevant mining regulations for surface operations. Lead and coordinate significant incident investigations, and safety audits to identify and mitigate risks. Monitor and report on safety performance, ensuring continuous improvement in safety culture. Demonstrate Safety Leadership and improve the Culture within the team and with peers regarding Safety, Health, and Sustainable Development

 

QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

 

Qualification

Must have a Degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences or similar qualification from a recognised institution. Must have either ISO 45001 internal or lead auditor’s certification. Must have HSE Superintendent Certificate of Competency from Minerals Commission of Ghana or better. Must have or be more than 60% in the process of having NEBOSH International Diploma in Health and Safety Must poses a valid Ghanaian driving licence.

 

Experience

A minimum of 6+ years’ experience in a related role within a mining environment and can demonstrate supervisory/management experience. Must have an in-depth understanding and working knowledge of general safety rules and mining regulations. Must have experience in application of Health and Safety principle in Mine Processing Plant Operations, Surface Mining Operations, Surface Infrastructure, Engineering and Maintenance Workshop. Must have a Ghanaian driving licence and experience driving in steep terrain environment. Must be able to lead investigations involving significant incident using methodologies such as Taproot, IIP, ICAM, SCAT, etc
