THE POSITION: Safety Intern
The Safety Intern plays a critical leadership role in fostering a proactive and data-driven safety culture within the organization. The Safety Intern is responsible for driving continuous improvement across all safety programs, guiding compliance with OSHA and company standards, and supporting the development and implementation of site-wide risk reduction strategies.
This role requires a collaborative leader who can communicate effectively with cross-functional departments, influence change, and integrate safety into all levels of operations.
This position is based in the manufacturing workroom and requires a hands-on approach to safety. The ability to respond quickly to incidents or inspections, lead in dynamic environments, and support frontline teams is essential.
Essential Job Functions of the position may include:
Work in conjunction with Safety Director on safety projects. Analyze safety performance data using Safety Culture and other tools to identify patterns, trends, and recurring hazards. Create and present interactive safety dashboards to workroom production leadership teams, including KPIs, incident trends, and training metrics. Translate safety data insights into training materials, awareness campaigns, and targeted corrective actions. Develop training modules for the leadership team, as well as the onboarding process, into safety culture for each safety policy. Develop and execute data-driven initiatives aimed at prevention of injury and continuous improvement of safety culture. Support incident investigations, lead root cause analyses, and ensure corrective actions are tracked to closure. Oversee and ensure consistency in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and risk assessments; support periodic reviews to align with operational changes. Conduct facility walkthroughs and safety inspections at scheduled intervals, report findings to department supervisors and managers. Coordinate company-wide drills, including fire and emergency evacuation exercises. Review and approve safety communications including briefings, campaigns, and toolbox talks. Conduct safety training for new hires (onboarding) and existing employees when Safety Leads are unavailable. Monitor the safety training matrix; collaborate with leads and production managers to ensure 100% compliance. Participate in Gemba Walks and weekly stand-up meetings with safety lead; provide updates on safety implementation and collect feedback. Participate in the Site Health and Safety Committee. Stay current with regulatory updates and industry best practices; recommend improvements and evaluate new safety technologies. Demonstrate professionalism and leadership through respectful communication and a positive, assertive tone. Lead by example in promoting a proactive safety culture. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Currently a student of an associate or bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Environmental Health, or related. OSHA 30 Certification required (company may provide). Proficiency in data analysis tools, such as Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, formulas), Power BI or Tableau is strongly preferred. Strong understanding of OSHA standards and manufacturing safety practices. Bilingual (English/Spanish) required. Ability to lead and influence others, foster accountability, and engage across multiple departments. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation experience. High attention to detail, with ability to interpret trends and translate data into actionable plans. Must be able to work flexible schedules and weekends if required. Ability to walk, stand, and conduct inspections for extended periods; able to lift up to 25 pounds.
