STS Aviation Services is hiring a Safety Engineer to join its growing team in Birmingham.
The Safety Engineer plays a critical role in supporting the implementation and continuous improvement of the organisation’s Safety Management System (SMS). Working closely with the Safety Manager and other key stakeholders, the Safety Engineer ensures that hazards are identified, risks are assessed, and effective mitigations are applied across the organisation.
This role is central to promoting a positive safety culture, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements (EASA Part-145, UK CAA Part-145, and ICAO Annex 19), and supporting operational teams in achieving safe, efficient, and compliant maintenance activities. Regular travel to company sites and facilities will be required based on operational and business needs.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesSafety Reporting System
Monitor, review, and action safety reports within the organisation’s reporting system Ensure accurate classification, follow-up, and closure of safety reports in a timely mannerHazard Identification & Risk Management
Support the hazard identification process and maintain the hazard log Contribute to the risk register by assessing risks and recommending mitigation measures Assist in the Management of Change (MoC) process for organisational or operational changesSafety Investigations
Conduct or assist in internal investigations of safety events, incidents, and occurrences Ensure root cause analysis (RCA) is performed and corrective/preventive actions are implemented effectively Support the submission of Mandatory Occurrence Reports (MORs) to regulatory authoritiesSafety Performance Monitoring
Support the development, monitoring, and reporting of Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Provide data analysis and safety trend reports to management and safety committeesSafety Promotion
Assist in delivering safety awareness training and campaigns to staff Promote a proactive safety culture across the organisation Contribute to safety newsletters, alerts, and communicationsSafety Committees & Meetings
Support the Safety Action Group (SAG) and Safety Review Board (SRB) with preparation of material, minutes, and follow-up actions Participate in regular safety and compliance meetingsRegulatory & Audit Support
Support compliance with CAA, EASA, and ICAO requirements for SMS Provide input to audits, inspections, and regulatory oversight activities Monitor industry safety publications and best practices to ensure alignment with current standardsEscalation of Issues
Ensure that all significant safety concerns, overdue and or unresolved risks, or systemic issues are promptly escalated to the Safety Manager for further action
Training and Qualifications A relevant Engineering Degree (e.g., Aerospace, Mechanical, or Safety Engineering) and/or an Aircraft Maintenance Licence (EASA/UK CAA Part-66) is required Additional professional safety or quality certifications (e.g., Aviation Safety Management, ISO Auditor) are an advantageThe Safety Engineer will receive (or is expected to hold) the following training:
Initial and recurrent SMS Training (Level 1 & 2) Initial and recurrent EWIS Training Initial and recurrent FTS and CDCCL Training Occurrence Investigation Training Formal root cause analysis Human Factors Training (EASA Part-145 requirements) Risk Assessment and Management of Change Training Emergency Response Plan (ERP) Familiarisation Additional specialist training as required (auditing, data analysis tools) are an advantage Competence Requirements Strong knowledge of EASA/UK CAA Part-145 regulations and ICAO Annex 19 requirements Experience in safety reporting systems and risk management tools Analytical skills with the ability to identify trends, hazards, and root causes Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage across all levels of the organisation Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multi-site maintenance organisation Strong organisational skills and attention to detail Professional integrity and commitment to promoting a just culture Prior experience in an aviation maintenance environment (desirable) Computer literacy (MS Office, data analysis software, safety systems) Reporting Line Reports directly to the Safety Manager Escalates safety issues, risks, overdue and unresolved concerns to the Safety Manager without delay About STS Aviation ServicesSTS Aviation Services operates four state-of-the-art aircraft hangars, two interior modification facilities, and more than 40 line maintenance stations worldwide.
