RN First Assistant

**JOB SUMMARY**
The First Assistant RN will function as the primary assistant to the physician in the clinic, hospital or operating room, working directly with the physician and patients to help deliver exemplary medical care in both the clinical and hospital setting. This position will assist the physician in all aspects of the medical practice including preoperative, intra-operative and postoperative treatment of the patient.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE**
Assists the physician with preoperative pain management, in collaboration with other health care providers.
Performs preoperative evaluation and focused nursing assessments. Writes preoperative orders according to protocols.
Communicates and collaborates with other health care providers regarding the patient plan of care.
Serves as an intra-operative surgical first-assistant, while using instruments and medical devices, providing exposure, handling and cutting tissue, providing hemostasis, and suturing tissue (ACL graft preparation, vein harvesting, etc.).
Performs postoperative patient management, in collaboration with other health care providers, in the immediate postoperative period and beyond. Participates in postoperative rounds. Writes postoperative orders and operative notes according to established protocols.
Assists with discharge planning and identifying appropriate community resources as needed.
**KEY SUCCESS FACTORS**
At least two years of operating room experience required.
Must have good communication skills.
Must have excellent knowledge of operating room protocol.
Must be able to work effectively with all hospital departments.
Must have excellent knowledge of patient protocols within a clinic setting.
Must be able to work well with all members of the office staff.
Must be able to assist the physician in all aspects of the practice including assisting in surgery.

**EDUCATION:** BSN
**REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ 2+ years of RNFA experience
+ Must have Cardio-Thoracic surgery experience
+ Endovein Harvest experience highly preferred
