In the 26-bed 6400 Behavioral Health Unit at Akron General, caregivers progressively involve patients in their care plans, allowing them to work toward an increased self-responsibility and independence. Through medication and various therapies, they learn to rebuild their ability to fulfill daily living activities and cope with challenges. As an RN on this team, you will support these populations through their recovery processes, offering support, guidance and compassion alongside your fellow dedicated Psychiatrists, Social Workers, Therapists and other healthcare staff.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Provide direct nursing care. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for a given patient population. Complete ongoing assessments, recognize changes in patient condition and respond appropriately. Develop and update goals, involve patients and families in developing plans of care, coordinate the interdisciplinary plan of care and serve as a patient advocate. Administer treatments and medication. Participate in the ongoing interdisciplinary evaluation of patient/family outcomes, improvement of care and quality improvement process. Delegate tasks/assignments and serve as a resource person. Complete psychiatric core curriculum and Managing Disruptive Behavior Training within six months of hire. Provide individualized and timely interventions, establish priorities for delivering patient care, document nursing interventions and patient responses, participate in QI data collection, communicate information to oncoming nurses, perform unit coordinator responsibilities and participate in clinical instruction programs. Triage psychiatric patients that present to the ED, complete medical screening examination forms, initiate admission paperwork, assist with insurance/pre-certification, obtain physician orders, give reports to the floor and document all pertinent information. Assist with transporting patients and the assessment and treatment of psychiatric nursing issues in the ED. Consult on managing disruptive behavior and restraint issues, assess patients for suicide and elopement risk, recommend proper levels of patient observation and provide discharge information.Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduate from an accredited School of Professional Nursing (ADN or BSN program) Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red CrossSatisfactorily completes psychiatric core curriculum and disruptive behavior training within six months of appointmentIf assigned to ED Triage primarily, five years of nursing experience and three years of inpatient psych experiencePreferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
