Research Technologist - #Staff
The job will employ cultured human induced pluripotent stem cells from a range of neurological diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and various cell types derived from these iPSC such as neurons and astroglia to study the molecular underpinnings of disease. The technician will become proficient in the novel and modern methods of iPSC derivation, differentiation, and analysis. We are looking for a proficient **_Research Technologist_** with a sophisticated understanding of techniques and a solid foundation in the underlying science, gained from professional experience. The individual will works independently and manage daily research projects. The research technologist will participate in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices. The individual should be capable of independent judgment in the selection, development, performance and evaluation of research methods and operation of appropriate equipment. **Specific Duties & Responsibilities** + Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which include iPSC cell culture, immunohistochemistry, immunocytochemistry, microscopy, and other basic molecular biology techniques. + Uses various software applications, such as Excel spreadsheets, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports. + Participate in the organization and operation of the laboratory. Performs general lab maintenance duties, may need to order and manage supplies and reagents of the lab. Will need to maintain excellent written records and electronic databases. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. + Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens. + Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate. + Monitors biohazard/radiation safety standards and proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace. + Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures. + Keeps current knowledge of vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory requirements. **Minimum Qualifications** + Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field. + Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. **Preferred Qualifications** + Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred. + Some knowledge of and experiences with aseptic neuronal or glial culturing preferable. + Basic understanding of microscopy and immunohistochemistry/immunocytochemistry preferable.
