Position Information
We are seeking a full-time Research Technician II position responsible for overseeing multiple daily and weekly tasks associated with the farming operation and pasture management. This center farms approximately 1,500 acres of corn, sorghum sudangrass, wheat, and oats for animal feed and manages approximately 4,800 acres for grazing. While under direction, this position will implement and/or coordinate farming and pasture preparation, planting, maintenance, and harvesting duties pertaining to the center's management goals and research objectives. This position will be located at the McGregor Research Center.
Responsibilities:
+ Oversee farming operation, such as field preparation (plowing/discing, cultivating, chemical termination of plants), planting of grain and hay fields, maintaining weed and pest control on crops (herbicide and pesticide application), and harvesting (cutting, swathing, baling and hauling hay).
+ Assist with implementing management of pastures including bushhogging, brush clearing, application of herbicides/pesticides and fertilizers and any other techniques to ensure optimum forage production and healthy pastures.
+ Operate heavy equipment, such as tractor, plow disc, cultivator, planter, swather, hay rake, baler, bushhog, skid steer and attachments, augers, and grain truck.
+ Performs maintenance duties such as cleaning and repairing of equipment and facilities for optimal working conditions.
+ Assist when needed, implementing management and research protocols to include care of animals on a day-to-day basis in research setting. This includes (but not limited to) infrastructure maintenance and repair (fences, plumbing, welding).
+ Maintains training requirements for compliance.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
+ High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Three years of experience in related fields of work.
+ Current pesticide and/or herbicide applicators license, or ability to obtain within the first year of employment.
+ Knowledge of and experience using farming equipment.
+ Ability to communicate effectively.
+ Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Bachelor of Animal Science, Agronomy, Rangeland Ecology, or related field.
+ Five years of experience in related fields of work.
Other Requirements:
+ Ability to lift moderately heavy objects.
+ Ability to exert heavy force.
+ Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends.
