University of Washington
**Job Description**
As a UW employee, you have a unique opportunity to change lives on our campuses, in our state and around the world. UW employees offer their boundless energy, creative problem-solving skills, and dedication to build stronger minds and a healthier world.
UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits, and natural beauty.
The Center for Experimental Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics (CENPA) has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3.
CENPA is a fertile environment for experimental nuclear physics in the area of Fundamental Symmetries and Neutrinos, in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Many experiments are developed at CENPA, including LEGEND, He6-CRES, Project 8, KATRIN, Selena, DAMIC, COHERENT, Muon g-2, PIONEER, ADMX, and searches for deviations of the laws of gravity.
This position supports the ADMX experiment. ADMX is a DOE-funded flagship particle physics experiment searching for axion dark matter. Axions are hypothetical particles used to explain nuclear physics phenomena that may make up some or all of the dark matter in our universe. ADMX uses an axion haloscope style experiment to directly detect the conversion of axion dark matter into microwave photons.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operations of ADMX experiment including day-to-day management of microwave tuning, data quality monitoring, preliminary analysis, and performance of the cryogenics systems
Maintenance and upgrades of the microwave cavity system and tuning hardware. Motion at cryogenic temperatures presents engineering challenges because of thermal expansion.
Development of prototypes for future axion experiments.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in Physics or a related field
Four years relevant experience in one of the following subfields: Particle and Nuclear Physics, Microwave Cavities, Cryogenics, or an equivalent subfields.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Familiarity with microwave or RF physics
Experience in a laboratory with high magnetic fields
Experience in performing precision nuclear/particle physics experiments, or related fields
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
PhD in Physics or related field
Familiarity with microwave cavity resonators used in axion searches
Experience with particle physics data analysis
Ability to take on abstract assignments related to improving experiment performance
